Topic: European Exploration & Settlement in Canada As we discussed in class, the First People to settle in Canada likely came from Northeastern Asia, probably travelled from what is now Russia and made their way into what is now Alaska. From here, these people spread out across North and South America. You will also remember we studied some of these groups, as the Coastal People, Inuit, Iroquois, Plains People and People of the Plateau. We created ethnographies about their culture. We are now going to shift focus towards European exploration and settlement in Canada. Q = Which European people came first? Answer = Most historians believe people from the Nordic area of Europe, commonly referred to as Vikings, were the first to touch land in Canada about 1,000 years ago. Q = Which European groups came next? Answer = After the Vikings, people from France and Britain started to explore and settle in Canada roughly starting around the year 1600.
