US ARMY COMMAND AND GENERAL STAFF COLLEGE US Army Command and General Staff School Command and General Staff Officer Course (CGSOC) Common Core H100: History, Theory, Doctrine, Practice Advance Sheet for Lesson H105 Clausewitz: History, Theory and Doctrine Chronology 1780 Clausewitz born 1 July in Burg bei Magdeburg in the Kingdom of Prussia. 1792 Clausewitz joined the Prussian army. 1801 Clausewitz accepted into the newly reformed Prussian “war college” in Berlin, where Gerd von Scharnhorst became a mentor; Clausewitz graduated at the top of his class in 1803. 1804 Clausewitz wrote his first major work, Strategy . 1806 Clausewitz spent a year in France as a French prisoner after capture during the Jena-Auerstadt campaign. 1808 Clausewitz joins Scharnhorst on the Military Reform Commission, while serving as adjutant to Prince August of Prussia. 1810 Clausewitz and Scharnhorst moved to the newly created General Staff, and Clausewitz began teaching at the War Academy. He served as tutor to Crown Prince Frederick William. Clausewitz promoted to major and marries the Imperial Countess Marie von Bruhl, lady in waiting to the Queen of Prussia. 1812 Clausewitz served with the Russian army as a staff officer during the 1812 Campaign and participated in the Battle of Borodino. Clausewitz engineered the Convention of Taurrogen in December, which secured the neutralization of the Prussian Corps of Prussian Generalfeldmarschall Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg and helped spur Prussia’s revolt against Napoleon. 1813 Clausewitz, under Yorck’s protection and still serving as a Russian Officer, formed the Russo-German Legion from German prisoners of Napoleon’s Grande Armee. He was later assigned as Chief of Staff to the multi-national Corps of General Count Ludwig von Wallmoden-Gimborn, which masked the forces of Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout in Hamburg. 1815 Battles of Ligny, Wavre, and Waterloo—Clausewitz served as Prussian III Corps Chief of Staff, which tied down Marshal Emmanuel de Grouchy’s wing of Napoleon’s army at Wavre on the day of the Battle of Waterloo.
