The transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 is challenging due to its complexity. Still, it is more beneficial because the format is more specific, giving doctors, patients, and payers more details on diagnosis, treatment information, and services. In addition, it provides more details for disease monitoring. With mapping, many ICD-9 codes map easily to ICD-10 with a one-to-one conversion. However, other codes require additional information and specificity to map code solutions (AAPC, 2020). HIM professionals are critical in planning and developing data maps utilizing code sets. They ensure competency in sources and target systems with mapping projects and capture all healthcare data elements required for external reporting purposes like reimbursement, patient safety measurement, and research (Wilson, n.d.).
I was paired with Stormy, and with the help of an Excel sheet, we could compare our answers. Initially, I had some different answers. After reviewing hers and being more thorough when looking up and comparing our different answers, I feel we did pretty well! I am not confident about all of them, but it was because we did not have enough information, especially when mapping ICD-9 to ICD-10.
This discussion was very hard for me. The resource linked would not work for
me, and the other resources I found to help, I could not get to work either, which tells me I did something incorrectly. Because I went wrong somewhere, the entire mapping process was difficult. I could find some of the codes online with resources such as AAPC and find a code; however, when I was trying to transfer codes and map them, I needed more information about many of the codes. Many codes gave a vague description, whereas the ICD-10 specifically required more specifics to develop a code. Thankfully, many code options were "unspecified," so I could complete the codes. This assignment was frustrating, and I am excited to receive feedback
and read your discussion posts to clarify how to do this correctly!
