Part 1: Creating a Research Question

Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.
My values, assumptions, and beliefs affected my topic. As an African American, I believe it vital to learn about racism, its history, and what black individuals experience. The Tulsa Massacre shows us how certain individuals despise wealthy black people. Which is something they are not
used to. Financial stability is valued because it assists with reducing the concerns that come from living paycheck to paycheck. In Tulsa, the African Americans had financial stability due to successful businesses. My opinion and perspectives might influence how I study my chosen topic
because it will interest me to understand more about the Tulsa Massacre's historical roots. 2.
Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event.
Is the Tulsa Massacre still pertinent now and why? There’s a recent event that relates to the Tulsa Massacre. “Ten individuals were shot and killed in a supermarket located in Buffalo, NY. Which Payten Gendron 18-year-old was charged with murder.” (Wall Street Journal, 2022) My research question and the event are connected because white people have targeted black communities for decades. The Tulsa Massacre is an example of how this type of violence has been ignored for centuries. Within both situations, the objective was to target black communities and both of them are hate crimes.” The grocery store within Buffalo, NY
was in a primarily black community and the gunman targeted it for that reason.” (Wall Street Journal, 2022)

These are the sources that I used to strengthen my research question by making sure they gave me the proof needed to fully answer my research question. Both of my sources gave significant detail on what occurred the day of the Tulsa Massacre and the impact it had on African Americans. These sources give information on how the Tulsa Massacre is one of the U.S.'s worst acts of violence. Lastly, both sources helped in ensuring my research question was clear, straightforward, and specific. Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions

Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.

Between May 31 to June 1, 1921, the Tulsa Massacre occurred. The riot started once the armed white crowd attacked the black residents and demolished their businesses and homes in a predominantly black community. Dick Rowland was the start of the Tulsa Massacre. He was a young black teen who was accused of sexually assaulting Sarah Page a young white girl on an elevator. As this rumor spread throughout the city, it also was printed on the Tulsa Tribune front page. At this point, the angry white crowd became furious and went to the courthouse commanding the sheriff to give Rowland over and the sheriff declined. “The white crowd was looking to lynch Rowland. Once the black community found out about Rowland possibly being lynched, they then went armed to the courthouse where they met up with the crowd.” (History, 2022) My current events and historical events are the same, which is a hate crime. Just like they were targeted in the Tulsa Massacre, they were targeted in the Buffalo shooting. This created a constant cycle of white individuals destroying black individuals.

Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
White Americans within Tulsa are the historical group participating in the Tulsa Massacre. Black Wall Street in Tulsa is home to the thriving black-owned businesses that were destroyed by the white crowd. “In a 35 sq ft block about 300 people were murdered and about 1200 homes were burned down and about 60 businesses such as schools, churches, libraries, hospitals, and more.”
(Richardson, 2021) At this time a considerable number of white residents were not economically
thriving and were seeing black individuals living luxuriously. Even though blacks found a way to overcome, blacks still are not supposed to have more than whites based on white supremacy. “This resulted in the mob exceeding black individuals by 20 to 1. Bombs were dropped by Old WW1 planes in Greenwood, while the mob killed black individuals, burned down businesses, homes, and loot. (Richardson, 2021)

Explain the historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
What motivated the white mob was pure hate and jealousy. Before the Tulsa Massacre whites and blacks already had preexisting tension because of the racist laws incorporated since the 1800s. Blacks around the 1900s wanted better opportunity and somewhere with minor racist laws, so they migrated to the north instead of the South. Moving doesn’t completely remove racist individuals, just lessen. In Tulsa racial hostility in the 1900s was common. “White residents
have exaggerated or made-up situations many times, regarding what occurred between them in the black residents to justify the reason they used violence.” (Elizabeth, 2019) This proof demonstrates how the white residents used the rumor about Rowland as an advantage to demolish the black residents and black Wall Street.
Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative

Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event.
While researching the history of my historical event a narrative I discovered is how the Tulsa Massacre began. What started the Tulsa Massacre was a young black male being accused of sexually assaulting a young white female in an elevator. Once the white residents were informed, they then tried to lynch him, then the black residents tried to stop the lynching. Which caused the massacre to begin which left black individuals with nothing. This narrative has remarkably affected the comprehension of my historical event. It shows a clear understanding of what happened. African Americans in Tulsa around this time were treated poorly even though
at this time in Tulsa they had more than the white residents.

Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known or unknown about history.
Biased outlooks in primary and secondary sources influence how my present and historical event is understood. For instance, my primary and secondary sources spoke about the white residents being jealous of the black residents because of their success and wealth. It was also portrayed as if the white residents were less fortunate at this time even though all the white residents were not poor just like all the black residents were not wealthy and successful.

Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from your historical event’s narrative.
The white residents who started the Tulsa Massacre perspectives are missing from my historical event narrative. It’s evident why the white resident's story was non-existent. Their action caused
a great deal of damage and pain within the black community. Their viewpoint was silence due to
drawing attention to the damage they created to Black Wall Street is more essential. I wonder if their narrative would differ from my source's story and how they would explain their actions.
Part 4: Connecting the Past With the Present

Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current event.
Inspecting my historical roots from my current event helped better my knowledge of my current
event because I understand clearly that discrimination is a never-ending issue. 100 years ago, the Tulsa Massacre occurred, and blacks are currently being targeted. Studying its historical background assisted in my comprehension of the link between racism in the present and the past.

Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an individual.
It’s beneficial to be well-informed of your values, assumptions, and beliefs. When getting information in my professional, personal, and academic life, my assumptions are wrong sometimes. Examining my assumptions could assist me in being more open-minded.

Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary issues.
Being a more historically informed citizen may assist with understanding contemporary issues due to me being able to ask more serious questions about why these problems occurred. It also will assist me with understanding how past events affect current events. For instance, I’ll be able
to discover reoccurring patterns and lastly know that similar problems occurred in the past.
