Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event.
The narratives in both primary sources are first-hand accounts of what was experienced during this historical event. These testimonies were given by African Americans that survived the Tulsa Massacre, and these survivors were children at the time and residents of the Greenwood district. My secondary sources were written nearly 100 years after the event. The narrative for my secondary sources documents the events that occurred during and after the Tulsa Massacre. The analysis and description of the Tulsa Race Massacre are based on historical research and data.
Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event.
One narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of the Tulsa Race Massacre is that 1921 was “ultimately and officially framed as an uprising of a dangerous black mob (Messer, Beamon, Bell, 2013).”
Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and explain how the selected history helps you better understand your historical event.
Revised research question:
What caused the Tulsa Race Massacre?
o
What effects did this have on the people both directly and indirectly involved?
What was the root cause of whites attacking and killing African Americans in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the “Tulsa Race Massacre “of 1921?
I now understand that at that time, Jim Crow Laws existed. Segregation and racially motivated violence were not viewed as injustice in 1921. Jim Crow etiquette stipulated that blacks could never behave in a manner that could be viewed as being on equal plans as whites. Government and legal officials legitimized oppression, racial violence, racial inequity, racial disparity, and white supremacy. Judges and law enforcement officials used the KKK society to instill fear by any
means they saw fit. Many were lynched, burned, rapped, and pillaged by whites who did not fear repercussions or the danger of legal accountability.
