HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
My historical research question is: What role did Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash play in the leadership
of the Wounded Knee Occupation, and how did she contribute to the movement's goals and objectives?
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event.
My research question is based on the historical event of Wounded Knee Occupation. Connecting
the Wounded Knee Occupation (historical event) to current events can improve our understanding of the historical event by showing how the issues that led to the occupation are still relevant today. Moreover, discussing the life and legacy of female activist Anna Mae Pictou-
Aquash is an untold story in comparison to the male leaders of the movement. Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
Focusing on Pictou-Aquash's murder instead of her activism and leadership in AIM is one example of a biased point of view. This emphasis on her death reinforces the idea that Indigenous women are victims rather than agents of change and overlooks her important role in advancing AIM's goals. Historical narratives need a missing viewpoint to be complete and inclusive. It can correct old biases, myths, and stereotypes.
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
Incorporating a missing perspective could challenge existing myths and stereotypes about historical events. By focusing primarily on the experiences of male leaders and activists, historical accounts have made it hard to see what women did and how they helped the movement. In order to understand the Wounded Knee occupation and how it affected Native American communities, it is important to include women's thoughts and experiences in the historical record.
Overall, it is important to include a missing perspective in historical accounts to give a completer
and more accurate picture of past events. Also, it can challenge existing biases, myths, and stereotypes and give a more accurate and nuanced picture of the past.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
A missing view of women's activism in the AIM would show how important women's leadership and control were in the movement. Women in the AIM served as leaders, organizers, activists, and caretakers, and their contributions were critical to the movement's success. By acknowledging and celebrating the role of women in the AIM, we could gain a more complete and accurate understanding of the movement and its impact on Native American communities.
