HIST 232: Professor Makowicki
Book Research Essay Instructions
Pay close attention to these instructions; they contain crucial information on the
assignment, formatting, and grading procedures.
Assignment
: Using both assigned texts, Alvah F. Hunter’s A Year on a Monitor
and James A. Dunn’s On Board the USS Mason
, answer one of the following questions in an essay of 1,000 to 1,200 words
(min and max). Essays will be graded for clarity, format, adherence to instructions, and accurate supporting evidence. No outside sources (websites, books, etc.) are required nor should they be used.
Your essay must address the question and provide sufficient evidence to support your thesis (argument). Essays that (a) do not refer to specific incidents/examples from the books or (b) do not show a clear understanding of the cited material or (c) fail to engage with both books and utilize at least two quotations from each book (see below) will be penalized.
Due Date and Turnitin
: All book research essays must be submitted via the Turnitin link on Canvas by 12:40 PM on 13 April. Turnitin will ‘open’ for submissions and appear on Canvas 48 hours before the assignment is due. It is strongly recommended that students submit their paper at least 30 minutes before the deadline and retain proof of their submission
(via screenshot or another method) as insurance in case of a technological issue. Be advised that Turnitin will not accept late papers
. Therefore, it is important to contact the instructor before the deadline if you are having problems. Essays emailed to the instructor will not be accepted.
Late Papers
: All students who need to submit late papers must contact the instructor for further directions. Late papers will be penalized 10 points (one letter grade) immediately after the 12:40 PM deadline on 13 April, and 10 additional points for every 24 hours thereafter. Owing to the long-term nature of the assignment, an excused absence will not be considered justification for turning in a late paper (except in extreme cases at the discretion of the professor).
Answer ONE of the following questions
:
1). Naval service often consists of long stretches of monotony and boredom punctuated by brief periods of excitement and action. By what methods did Alvah F. Hunter and James A. Dunn maintain their morale and stay prepared to fulfill their duties aboard Navy warships? What were the major similarities or differences in the way that each sailor interacted with his shipmates and officers? How did their feelings on naval service or on their respective wars evolve over the course of their time in the U.S. Navy?
2). Alvah F. Hunter and James A. Dunn had vastly different backgrounds and fought in wars separated by more than 75 years. Yet they both chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy and served steadfastly during their respective conflicts. Based on a close reading of Hunter’s memoir and Dunn’s diary, what are the most significant
challenges/obstacles these men faced during their naval service? (You may wish to discuss age, race, conditions aboard ship, relations with shipmates/officers, or combat, but you are not limited to these topics). How did the hardships Hunter and Dunn faced and the everyday realities of their service overlap in meaningful ways?

Quality
: Essays will be graded for clarity, format, and university-level writing skills. Spelling, grammar, clarity, adherence to instructions, and evidence are important. Before submitting your final draft, you should read it (aloud) and ask yourself if it answers the following questions: Does
it address the prompt? Does it contain references to specific incidents from each of the books? Is the evidence cited appropriate to the argument? Does it follow the format/citation instructions?
Format
: All essays should be in Word format, 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1” margins. The student’s name, course number, word count, acknowledgement of sole authorship, and the essay question should all be at typed at the top of the first page but will not be included in the word count (see the example essay below). You do not need to include a separate bibliography or works cited page, as the instructor assigned the two books being used.
Acknowledgement of Sole Authorship
: Students must type the question they are answering, and the following words at the top of their essay: “
I certify that the following is my own work. I have worked independently in writing all answers. I have documented all citations
.” This acknowledgement does not count towards the word limit. This statement should not be interpreted as prohibiting seeking help with the University Writing Center or the instructor. Membership in a social media group created to share information or quotations on the research essay will be interpreted as a violation of both this statement and of the Aggie Honor Code.
Citation Instructions
: Each research essay must contain at least two quotations per book
. After a quotation, insert the short title of the book in italics (
Monitor or Mason
), inside parenthesis, with comma and page number followed by the period that ends the sentence. For example, (
Monitor
, 109). Quotations should be used to convey an author’s interpretation of events or to emphasize a point, not merely to repeat factual information. Students who fail to use the correct citation format will be penalized. Students are permitted to use Kindle/eBooks, but all
quotations must be cited by the printed page # to allow the instructor to verify them.
Plagiarism
: According to the Aggie Honor System Office
, Plagiarism is “The appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving appropriate credit.” Plagiarism
often occurs when a writer neglects to credit the author of textual sources in a paper. Plagiarism applies to written or electronic text found in books, journals, newspapers, web sites, etc. It also pertains to visual documents such as photographs, charts, interviews, television programs, and material taken from lectures. In other words, it covers all created sources. Inexperienced writers may commit plagiarism as a result of an incomplete knowledge of citation standards. It is your responsibility as an author, and yours alone, to properly document your sources.
Writing Center
: Students are encouraged to look at the website for the University Writing Center (UWC) at writingcenter.tamu.edu. The mission of the UWC is to help you develop and refine the communication skills vital to success in college and beyond.
