HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Haitian Independence Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences. I am unaware of the details of the Haitian revolution, but I understand that the nation of Haiti is the result of a successful slave revolt and one of the first nations to be black-led or led by people of African descent. France owned Haiti at one point and even enslaved people to work the land and fields. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose. I believe the people of Haiti suffered under French rule before gaining their independence because of the use of forced labor and slavery. I assume the people did not have much control of their life and governments and very little outside help or help from other nations if they received any direct help at all. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society. The topic of Haitian Independence is relevant because the people fought for freedom and believed that no one should be enslaved. Today, there are conflicts involving parties that abuse their power and use their strength to bully others into submission such as the Russia and Ukraine conflict and the war in Tigray. For no reason other than greed and the need for control, innocent people lose their homes, schools, and their lives. Though it isn’t slavery, the people have no control over what the powerful governments choose to impose. 1
