HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Creation of Earth Day
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
Earth Day was created because there weren’t any federal regulations or laws in place for environmental protection at the time. The idea was to shine light on the importance and the need for defensive measures, protections, and certain regulations for environmental conservation and protection.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
Gaylord Nelson, a United States senator, initiated teach-ins to raise awareness for environmental protection in 1970. This idea would become what is known as Earth Day.
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
Senator Nelson was motivated to do something about environmental protection after the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969 which may not have happened with better reinforcements of the oil well.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
It’s reported that thousands of animals were exposed and covered by the oil from the spill and lost their lives because of this (Hamilton, 2019). An unknown number of marine animals were also killed by the disaster. These tragedies received the attention of the public and helped spark action by lawmakers. Santa Barbara was also home to many “wealthy Republicans who had helped elect Nixon” Hamilton (2019). This would be an opportunity for then President Nixon to gain points with Americans as he signed the environmental legislation.
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic.
The UN climate change summits, specifically COP26 in 2021, presented the possibility of multiple different governments and belief systems agreeing on common goals which is similar to
Earth Day in the way that it was materialized—a problem was identified and addressed with the public and private government to find solutions through goals and federal regulations.
