The white settlers considered Indian nations to be an obstacle that prevented them from progressing. 2. What Native American groups stood in the way of this expansion? The Native American groups that were in the way of the expansion were the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole. 3. List 2 actions of Andrew Jackson that supported Indian Removal? Andrew Jackson forced military to defeat most of the Creek nation and negotiated 9 out of 11 treaties that stripped land from the Native Americans. 4. How did the Supreme Court rule in 1823 in regards to the Native American land claims? The Supreme Court decided that Native Americans could occupy land in the US but could not hold a tiltle to the land. 5. How did the Native Americans respond to the Supreme Court ruling? The Native Americans were not happy and some of the nations restricted land sales to the government. 6. List one non-violent tactics used by the Native Americans? A non-violent tactic that the Native Americans used was adopting Anglo-American practices like Western education, large-scale farming, and slave-holding. 7. What justification did the Cherokee have for suing Georgia in 1830 ?How did the Supreme Court rule? The Cherokee used an 1830 Georgia law that prohibited whites from living on any Indian territory. 8. What did the Indian Removal Act do/say? The Indian Removal Act gave the President power to negotiate removal treaties with Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi.
9. What was the Seminole reaction? The Seminole refused to leave and ended up going to war. 10. What was the Creek reaction? The Creek agreed to give them whatever land they wanted as long as they could keep some of it and stay connected to their ancestral land. They had eventually been kicked out. 11. What was the Cherokee reaction? The Cherokee were duped and went to war. 12. In your own words define - “Trail of Tears” The Trail of Tears was the forced march west of Native American tribes from the South to the Southeast that left many people deceased. When: 1836 Where: The Southeast Why: This letter was written in order to combat the treaty of New Echota.
