The federal prison intake can last several hours depending on how many inmates are there in the morning. It can be systematic and predictable at times. The more the arrivals the longer the process can be. The inmates should find themselves at their housing unit before dinner. Knowing what to expect on arrival makes them feel less anxious and more prepared. New arrivals also must go through a slew of health assessments and backgrounds. “All new arrivals receive a full-body X-Ray scan, a strip search, fingerprints, and photographs.” (Prison Professors, 2023) When it comes down to mental evaluations; this will give an idea if an inmate is a flight risk with being with other inmates. If these inmates can’t be with the rest of the population, they will be housed in the prisons special housing unit.
When it comes to the personnel running the federal prison, there are so many important departments to make it run smoothly. The top dog for instance which would be labeled as the warden or superintendent. They are the ones that oversee all the day to day operation of the prison. Below that position is the administrative assistants. They are responsible for staffing the prison including the financial aspects as well. Warden assistants are generally divided between operations and services. Its important that the administrative personnel are able to work with all faculties of the federal correctional system. Every department and title are responsible for making the facility run as smooth as possible. From personnel training to managing and maintaining financial accounts. Its important to abide by and appropriately adhere to communicating and working well with outside agencies, such as courts, law enforcement agencies, and other programs or municipalities.
“Unit Managers—One or more dormitory buildings comprise a housing unit, and the unit manager acts as a mini-warden over these units. He oversees matters related to inmate
management, including the unit team (see below), each prisoner’s central file, and each prisoner’s release preparation.”
“Supervisor of Education—In charge of administrating the education and recreational programs.”
“Supervisor of Health Services—In charge of the medical and dental services.”
“Captain—In charge of Lieutenants and custody staff.”
“Supervisor of Food Services—In charge of the meal preparations.”
“Supervisor of Facilities—In charge of maintaining the facility.” (Prison Professors, 2023) Inmates should be given mandatory base levels of care when it comes to educational purposes, healthcare, or even dietary needs. Those who are determined to have mental or physical disabilities should be provided additional assistance and will be evaluated accordingly. Though, inmates do lose some of their rights while incarcerated; staffing of the correctional facilities still need to treat inmates with respect and dignity. Inmates have rights and therefore should be able to practice free speech, religion, and different cultural aspects. “All prisoners shall
be treated with the respect due to their inherent dignity and value as human beings.” “There shall
be no discrimination on the grounds of race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” (OHCHR, 2023) which back in 1974 there was a class action lawsuit between Wolff vs McDonnell. The warden had violated a number of his constitutional rights. “The inmate, Robert O. McDonnell, had argued that the disciplinary proceedings within the prison violated due process, that the legal assistance program
in the prison was inadequate, and that the rules for inspecting mail from attorneys were unconstitutionally restrictive.” (Vile, 2023)
