Report
Lewis Charrie Applied History 12/4/2022 One of the biggest causes that overturned Roe v Wade was the pro-life movement. The pro-life movement gained a lot of steam due to the introduction of Christians to the movement. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, evangelical Christians joined the movement in great numbers, rejuvenating and eventually radicalizing the movement.” (Holland). With this type of backing from religious outlets, the pro-life movement started to push for the overturning of Roe v Wade. Even from the start when Roe v Wade was passed, many people still disagreed and tried to overturn it. Eventually, in 2022 Roe v Wade was officially overturned bringing a long battle to an end for the pro-life movement. The ability of a pro-life politician to earn a high-thought-of position was crucial for the overturning of Roe v Wade . With each year the pro-life movement was gaining traction reaching a majority towards overturning this. In 2020 Ruth Bader Ginsburg made big strides for pro-life “ Anxiety over Roe v. Wade increased even more with the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September 2020. Many pro-choice advocates worried that filling Ginsburg's seat with the much more conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett put abortion rights in grave danger. And indeed, Justice Barrett has a complicated history when it comes to abortion rights and stares decisis.” (Temme, 22). Even though Roe v Wade was overturned does not mean that the pro-choice movement will go away quietly. Just like the pro-life movement, the pro-choice movement has some powerful arguments. The main argument for the pro-choice movement is not just my body my choice, however, it is about the only other option than abortion is childbirth. “ The only
alternative to abortion is childbirth, which has a 14 times higher risk of death than that abortion. So, in denying a person access to a wanted abortion, states are forcing people to assume significant medical risks against their will. A recent study out of Colorado ominously predicts a significant rise in the maternal mortality rate, especially among Black women who already experience an unacceptably high rate of death in childbearing. (Housman, 22). When looking at the bigger picture for the pro-choice movement, an argument is being made. Moving forward there are some big steps that the pro-choice movement must take. The impact of overturning Roe v Wade is that it is a snowball effect. When you overturn something like this woman are now going to be either having the child and possibly making their life miserable and given a life nobody wants to live or women would likely take measures into their own hands and unsafely without medical help try and abort their fetus on their own or by other means. This could increase the rate of suicide as well. An example of what could happen would be that woman had been raped and didn’t want to keep the child because of this. If the woman feels she doesn’t have a choice in if she could keep the baby or not she might decide that the only choice that she has control over is to end her and her fetus’s life. This may be sad and a bit gruesome, however, when looking at both sides you need to dig deep and find the real issues no matter how hard and horrifying, they are. Another impact of this is that there will always be an ongoing battle and more than likely multiple changes to the abortion laws. Once something is overturned then the people and movements that were against the overturn will now try and overturn the ruling. This could be what seems to be an inevitable endless cycle of misguided women and those who want to take their choice away from them.
