PART A: Identify and explain the significance for technology and/or society of three (3) of the following terms (10 marks each). Do not repeat information from one term to another. Please base your answers on material taught in this course (readings and lectures). This section is worth 30 marks. Also, explain military and other reasons for the fall of the Western Roman Empire. 2) Did the stirrup really lie at the root of feudalism? Discuss, using information from the lectures and readings to defend or reject this proposition in the context of the features of feudal Europe. 3) Which do you think had a greater direct influence on social organization: the stirrup and mounted shock combat, or the hoplon and phalanx formation? Discuss, using evidence from the lectures and readings (if appropriate) to justify your answer. 4) Using examples from this course, explain why the idea that military technology shapes society is true or false

How did these features influence the outcomes of major naval battles? 9). Which is more important to success in battle: leadership, strategy, technology, luck, or other factors? Discuss, using examples of battles from this course. 11). Why did the hoplon lead to democracy but the stirrup led to aristocratic rule? Was the technology the main or only factor in this outcome?
