Goncalves 1 Sasha Goncalves HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University January 10, 2024 Topic and Research Question Topic: For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on The Cherokee "Trail of Tears," and the effect it has had on succeeding generations of Native Americans. The Eastern Woodland Indians, native residents of the Southeast Region of the United States, were forcefully removed in the 1830s along the Trail of Tears, a path that symbolized the negative attitudes of American lawmakers towards Native Americans. The incident had terrible repercussions for the nation, including widespread hunger, illness, and extreme fatigue. Of the initial population of 15,000 Cherokee Native Americans, 4,000 lost their lives on the difficult journey known as the Trail of Tears. This incident has great significance in the history of American history. Research Question: What were the surrounding events that led to the enactment of the Indian Removal Act of 1830? Search Terms and Sources Search terms that I have used in my research so far include: 1830s Native American, Trail Tears, The “Indian Problem”, Indian removal act, John ross. The first secondary source I want to utilize for my historical event is Lance Green's educational research entitled "Their Determination to Remain: A Cherokee Community's Resistance to the Trail of Tears in North Carolina". This source provides me insight into the Cherokee people's experiences as they abandon their homes and migrate hundreds of miles away.
Goncalves 2 The educational analysis of Adam J. Pratt's book "Toward Cherokee Removal: Land, Violence, and the White Man's Chance" will be my next secondary source. This source presents a similar viewpoint as the other source, but it fluctuates in how it views the event; it is not just from the perspective of Cherokees. This source will provoke fresh thinking and pose additional questions for future investigation into the Trail of Tears. References
