Jessica O’Connell HIS 200: Applied History Southern New Hampshire University March 13, 2021 Preliminary Writing Plan For my historical event analysis, I have chosen to focus on The Cherokee “Trail of Tears” and how this event has affected the reservation housing of Cherokee descendants living in Okla- homa presently. The forced relocation of Native American tribes and the many lives and oppor- tunities lost along the way have gravely influenced Cherokee Culture to this day. The Cherokee Culture before the Trail of Tears was rich in agriculture and remaining on the same land through generations. Because the tribe was forced to relocate, I wanted to know how that affected their culture and if it changed any of their values in order to survive the far and dif- ficult march to an unfamiliar place. This narrowed my research down to one question: How did the forced relocation of the Cherokee people during “the Trail of Tears” influence the changing of social structure within families’ homes? How did each part of the family change their typically assigned roles? In what ways did Cherokee have to add elements of survival into their daily lives when on the Trail of Tears and when settling in Oklahoma? How else has the Cherokee Culture been impacted still today due to the Indian Removal Act? To search for the answers to these questions, I have been using the keywords: “Trail of Tears interview", "Indian Removal Act legislation", “Cherokee Trail of Tears before and after”, and "Cherokee reservations experience”. I need primary sources of first hand experiences from the Cherokee tribe to know how it really effected them. I have also been searching the terms "John Ross" and "Grant Forman's Indian Removal”. Lastly, to utilize boolean values with my search terms, I have been searching for "Trail of Tears AND the Cherokee experience" or "In- dian Removal Act legislation AND Cherokee reservations experience”. A secondary source that I found useful so far is a history.com article called “Trail of Tears” where it lays out a timeline of the event and an explanation of how this effected the Cherokee (History.com Editors, 2009). The specific search term I used to find this source was “Trail of Tears legislation”. Another secondary source that I found loaded with information about this topic on history.com was an article titled “How native Americans struggled to survive on the trail of tears” (Klein, 2019). This article features quotes the form of primary sources from eye witness accounts at the starting time of the Trail of Tears. The specific search term I used to find this source was “cherokee experience trail of tears”. A primary source I found useful was https:// www.cherokee.org , where all of the modern goals and updates of the Cherokee government in Oklahoma can be found. I found this source by searching “Cherokee Trail of Tears before and after”. After some research about this subject, I have decided to start off my research with a thesis that could answer my initial research question, yet is broad enough to expand on the topic: The forced relocation of the Cherokee tribe on the Trail of Tears nearly uprooted the tribe’s long- standing values, yet today the tribe has deepened their values of cultural preservation. It is likely that the thesis will change and become more detailed as more research is done in the next mod- ule.
The audience for my essay will be Professor Alphonso Casal, possibly the class during the discussions, and anyone I ask to read my essay.
