: · Historical Research Question: What initiated the momentum of environmental activism prior to the global observation of Earth Day?
Graded portion:
Primary sources include research reports and papers which present a unique perspective or question on the topic. A secondary source may reference a primary source and summarize or theorize the results of said research.
It is important to reference a variety of sources because it is not always sufficient to provide facts or statistics exclusively. Sometimes the most important outcome of research is the inferences which are formed by connecting several different perspectives on one issue. Secondary sources can provide not only factual information, but historical context as well.
Primary Source · Kraft, Michael. (2009). Before Earth Day: The Origins of American Environmental Law, 1945–1970 by Karl Boyd Brooks. Political Science Quarterly. Secondary Source · Gaylord Nelson and Earth Day: The Making of the Modern Environmental Movement
, Wisconsin Historical Society, http://www.nelsonearthday.net/collection/ The most relative current event which is connected to my historical research question is the rejoining of the United States to the Paris Agreement, which occurred in February of 2021 under the BIden Administration. This was a direct result of a shift in political power from right to left, as former president Trump was very adamant about his administrations denial of global warming. Much like the recognition of Earth Day, the condition of the environment was not as great of a concern as was the politics associated with environmentalism.
