HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
The topic I will choose to research is the ‘Creation of Earth day’ under climate change and environmental issues. Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
I do know that Earth Day is celebrated on April 22
nd
. I remember celebrating this in school every year and learning that it was first celebrated in 1970. I know that it was created to spread more awareness surrounding climate change and the effects that pollution has on our earth. I would like to learn more about the creation of this event and the severity of climate change and the potential negative effects it will have on our Earth. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
This is a topic I am passionate about. Educating those about Earth Day is very important but not just once a year, it should be every day. Every day we should be living life with the Earth in mind. Don’t litter, plant trees, and be conscious of products we use that will have a larger effect on our planet. It's great that this day exists but 1 day out of 365 days is not enough for our earth to feel the efforts of change. We should be living to keep our home, this Earth, balanced and clean. Participating daily will help keep our Earth livable. If humans act selfishly towards Earth and do not respect it, who knows how long it will be habitable. Money runs this world and companies or even just normal people are chopping trees down to make room for buildings or not switching over to electric vehicles just to either make profit or save a buck but we need to look in the future and how our decisions as people are going to effect the place we call home. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
I believe this topic will always be relevant to modern society. The past year climate change was noticeable. Last winter was not a normal winter, we barely had any snow, and it was not as cold as it has been in the past. That was concerning. And this summer was extremely HOT. Too hot for the northeast and abnormal. All over the country, states
were experiencing weather conditions that were not normal. If this doesn’t scream climate change to those who inhabit this Earth, I am not sure what else needs to happen before we make major changes in our day to day life to better help the future of our planet. 1
