Watts Rebellion
By analyzing Chapter 25 of the Elusive Eden and Watts video, we realized that
the long-term factor that resulted in the Watts rebellion included racial diversity was one of the
root causes because people in this region differed in opinion and started scrambling for
resources. California blacks were against the American white racism that escalated into war as
time passed(Rice et al., 2019). The statement implies that the existing racial discrimination
escalated the war. These people started scrambling for the limited resources that were unfairly
distributed among the population. The economic inequality and favoritism were thus another
long term factor resulting in a war.
Consequently, the minority people in
Watts region were against the police brutality that
they felt was targeting a
particular group of people. From Chapter 25, we realized that it
highlights the origin of a ghetto, discussing the separation and disenfranchisement of black
communities or people of color in the region. These minority communities faced social
inequality, including denial of quality education, political representation, and employment
inadequacy, leading to a feeling of marginalization leading to their protests.
Similarly, from the Video Watts- Riot or Revolt, the section of Los Angeles,
we realized
that the rebellion was because of a cumulative impact of the long-term factors that included the
struggle to end social injustice and promote respect for the civil rights of everyone in the region
including black people((AP Archive, 2016). The people in the area felt isolation was too much,
and thus, they had to protest against the atrocities and mistreatment that was going on. According
to the video, the underlying factor, such as poverty and arbitrary arrest of African American by
the police, limited resources and inequality allocations, societal neglect, as well as systematic
racial abuses, was too much on the local people. Therefore, from both scriptures, the long-term
3
factors of the Watt rebellion were social injustices, economic inequality, racial discrimination,
and arbitrary arrests.
