The Codification of Slavery
1.
Describe the regional variations of slavery throughout Britain’s North American
colonies. How did the development of and attitudes toward the institution differ in
each area?
Slaves were essential to the success of rice farming in the Carolinas. Although rice is a
notoriously difficult crop to cultivate, the Africans came equipped with extensive
knowledge and experience in this area. Slaves were very common in this region. Slaves
were significantly more scarce in the Chesapeake region. In order to make ends meet,
many white Europeans were indentured to serve for five to seven years in the tobacco
fields. Slaves were already a rarity in New England before the geography and
environment made them even more so.
2.
How and why did the nature of slavery change in the Middle Atlantic
colonies after the English seized the region from the Dutch?
The transformation of slavery occurred mostly due to its rapid expansion. In light
of the recently acquired territory, the English required individuals to oversee and
cultivate the land. However, in contrast to the southern states, these states
demonstrated a greater inclination towards acquiring slaves with a higher level of
expertise and skill. Consequently, a form of selective breeding and commerce
emerged, wherein slave dealers would acquire youthful, less seasoned slaves
exhibiting considerable promise, and subsequently exchange them for more
experienced ones in the Caribbean region.
3.
What tactics did slaves in the frontier colonies use to win their freedom? Why
were the slaves in these regions more difficult for slaveholders and colonial
governments to control?
In order to obtain their freedom, slaves resorted to using brute force and taking
advantage of the fact that the language barrier allowed them to speak openly. Due to
the nascent nature of these colonies, the absence of an established governmental
framework resulted in a lack of effective state governance to oversee the institution of
slavery.
4.
How did the character of slavery change throughout colonial North America
between 1619 and 1739? What factors were responsible for these changes?
During the early stages, slaves were gradually transported to be used as labor on
plantations. Over time, however, there was a significant increase in the rate at which
they were transported. In the latter part of this period of time, the Industrial
Revolution gave rise to new technologies that demanded a greater amount of labor
from its users. The number of people brought over as slaves was exponentially
increased as a result of technological improvements. Because of the Stono Rebellion,
the regulations governing slaves became considerably more stringent, which
contributed to the rise in their overall population.
