Discussion Post
In the United States, the mental health crisis has emerged as a pervasive and
urgent challenge, casting a shadow over the well-being of millions of individuals. Mental
health disorders affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses,
transcending demographic boundaries. The demand for mental health services is
stronger than ever, with nearly six in 10 (56%) Americans seeking or wanting to seek
mental health services either for themselves or for a loved one (National Council for
Mental Wellbeing
, 2022).
Amidst this complex landscape, addressing the mental health
crisis demands a comprehensive and compassionate approach, encompassing not only
clinical interventions but also societal awareness, stigmatization efforts, and policy
reforms to build a resilient and supportive mental health infrastructure for all.
With various efforts to treat and support the mental health crisis in the U.S.,
factors such as support, medical insurance, literacy, access to health options, and
provider availability are a few of the factors that affect this crisis. Furthermore, the government has been focusing on mental health crisis for years
especially since COVID-19 pandemic reached the U.S. As a result, anxiety and
depression increased significantly since the prolonged stay-at-home orders, with
disproportionately worse mental health outcomes among vulnerable groups. To address
the growing problem in year 2020, President Donald J. Trump is taking action to
improve Americans’ mental health which has been harmed by prolonged lockdowns. To
address the crisis under President Donald trump administration, the President signed an
Executive Order to address the negative impact of prolonged shutdowns on mental and
behavioral health and increase suicide prevention efforts while providing grant funding
2
support towards mental health treatment services. The President also allocated
approximately $425 million in emergency funds to address mental, and substance use
disorders (White House, 2020).
Meanwhile, in year 2022, President Biden addresses
mental health crisis by strengthening system capacity, connect more Americans to care,
and create a continuum of support –transforming our health and social services
infrastructure to address mental health holistically and equitably. As the president
provided an $700 million towards the programs, the President also pilot new
approaches to train a diverse group of paraprofessionals
to bridge the gap of shortage
and launches the “988” crisis response line, which allows the community to access the
care easily. In addition, President Biden Invest and expands the research and practices
of evidence-based community health services (The White House, 2022). Additionally, with successful policy and contribution of both Presidents, I
personally suggest providing free health insurances and free access in health care for
all the Americans during the pandemic will impact the problem in a positive manner. As
a result, the shift to single-payer healthcare would provide the greatest relief to lower-
income households and all Americans estimate that ensuring healthcare access would
save over 68,000 lives and 1.73 million life-years every year (Galvani et al., 2020)
