The not-for-profit organization that I chose for my strategic analysis is the Highmark Caring Foundation. The reason for the interest in this program is personal to my family and I. My parents had to work hard for what they had and they provided us with anything and everything they could and then some. We moved when I was a few months old from West Virginia to Pennsylvania in order for my parents to find better work. It was rough at first because my parents could not track down a job that would be lenient with two little kids. My dad worked for a construction company while my mom searched for work until she tracked down a job at a bank downtown. It was the beginning of winter and my mom was still on her probation period at work before her insurance kicked in for not only her and my dad but my sister and I as well. I unfortunately had gotten sick and my parents were scrambling at the time to try and find ends meet just moving and both finally securing jobs. The Highmark Caring Foundation kicked in to help pay for my hospital visit as well as the treatments I needed in order to get over my illness. My parents were forever grateful and always made it their top priority to ensure my sisters and I’s health were their main priority. Both my parents have busted their backs for countless years and hours to be where they are today and now don’t have to worry about a finding a job or scrunching up money because they now have it through their businesses. My family and I understand the need for help and have seen it firsthand how this program has benefitted the many lives of children and their families all across Pennsylvania. I chose the Highmark Caring Foundation for my final project not only for personal reasons but I believed it would also be a great organization to do for a strategic analysis because of the longevity of program. One will see the starting numbers to those of today to see how many more lives were helped throughout time. The Highmark Caring Foundation exists to help children who are uninsured to receive the treatment they deserve. The foundation doesn’t only serve children; it also extends its services to
the child’s family members as well. The mission statement for the Highmark Caring Foundation is as follows “Because the death of a family member is devastating in the life of a child, turning the child’s whole world upside-down, and becoming the defining moment of the child’s life… And because caring, understanding and support from those around the grieving child can make an important difference in how that child copes with the impact of death… (Highmark Caring Place, n.d.).” The purpose of this mission is to bring awareness to the needs of grieving children, provide programs to address those needs, and better equip the community to support those children who have experienced loss of a loved one (Highmark Caring Place, n.d.). “The Caring Foundation began in 1985 in order to respond to the needs of uninsured children falling through the cracks of the health care system (Highmark Caring Place, n.d.).” The Caring Foundation was the first program of its kind that paved way for other programs like it to be instituted throughout the nation. In 1996 there was a shift in the program that was geared toward childhood grievance. The Highmark Caring Foundation was found by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield which was Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Blue Shield back in 1985. As of date the Highmark Caring Foundation has been helping individuals for over 38 years. Within a few short years the Highmark Caring Foundation will be around for four decades and within those four decades it has accomplished great success. Some of the accomplishments are listed below 1989- launched partnerships with schools 1993- CHIP enrolls first child 2001- Erie location opens 2008- Children’s Grief Awareness Day launched 2012- Summer Camp program launched in Erie
2017- 20 th anniversary of the addition of grieving services (Highmark Caring Place, n.d.) The Highmark Caring Foundation has numerous offices and four distinct locations in Pennsylvania. The locations for the Highmark Caring Foundation are Pittsburgh, Erie, Warrendale, and Harrisburg. At these locations they serve children and the child family whether it is through grieving, advice, or medical treatment. Since the shift the main focus of the Highmark Caring Foundation is grieving children. The other services are still available if not made available to ensure the child is taken care for at full capacity and to ensure that they know that are not alone in whatever they are facing.
