Advocacy Action Plan Summary
One health issue in my county (Salt Lake County, Utah) is suicide deaths. In my county
there is a significantly higher rate of suicide deaths as compared to the rest of the country. In Salt
Lake county the rate of suicide Deaths is 22 deaths per 100,000 population as compared to the
rest of the United States where the rate is 14 deaths per 100,000 population
(
Salt Lake, Utah
,
n.d.). Suicide is a tragic event but it can be preventable given the right resources to those in need
of it.
My advocacy plan for this would be to increase the quality and quantity of mental health
resources and make it readily and easily available to those who need it. The most important thing
is that people are aware of these resources and know how easily available and accessible it is to
all. Doing this would require advertising in multiple forms as well as using Doctors offices and
hospitals who can provide education and educational material in order to help reach all
audiences. Social media advertisements can be useful in reaching younger populations while
improving the education and educational materials provided in hospitals and doctors offices can
help reach many other populations. It would also be important to create a simple website or app
in which people could easily access in times of crisis. These few steps, if executed properly,
could significantly reduce the amount of suicide deaths in my county, as well as anywhere this is
implemented.
