1. Unit Introduction
Welcome to Unit 4!
In Unit 1, we became familiar with what was meant by educational research and the educational research process. We reviewed
writing a research proposal, formulating a research topic, reviewing existing literature, collecting data, observing ethical behavior in research, and using technology in the research process.
In Unit 2, we discussed how to start the research process and we learned about research methodologies, resea
bias, and the various techniques for collecting data.
In Unit 3, our focus was on research ethics, and quantitat
vs. qualitative research strategies. We learned about quantitative vs. qualitative research, gathering and analyzing data, applying theory to research, about educational research standard and ethical standards.
For Unit 4 we will spend time learning about assessment and evaluation. We will specifically focus on assessin
performance, and we will differentiate between summative and formative assessment and summative and formative evaluation.

· Individual Project and Common Assessment
Assignment(s) Overview
Discussion Board.
The Discussion Board assignment has two parts. In Part I you are to provide your opinion in response to questi
about available technology, and the claims touted about the technology. In addition, you are also to provide an
opinion regarding the advantages and disadvantages to conducting research online. Based on that opinion, you
then need to share your thoughts about how to go about finding the most reliable sources of information for a research project.
With Part II, you are to locate an advertisement or commercial that implies research study results. Describe the
claims made and discuss how differences in sampling of the population might create biased results. Discuss wh
could account for the biased results. Read the posts of your classmates, and respond with constructive feedback
suggestions, questions, and additional resources as appropriate and in alignment with the AIU Discussion Boar
Policy. You will be graded using the Grading Rubric below.
In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings. Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking. If asked fo
your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument. Include
enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.
Individual Project and Common Assessment.
The Individual Project and Common Assessment are a part of institutional effectiveness, program quality and graduate candidate programmatic outcome mastery measurement initiatives. Your assignment will be assessed
using the grading criteria that align with the program progression and national standard requirements. Those requirements are provided for you within the assignment description.
For this assignment, you are to specifically assume the role of an instructor of a basic skills class at a local community college, you have been asked to provide ideas for assessing the writing ability of entering learners
through the use of traditional and nontraditional methods. The assessment approaches and instruments that you
recommend will be used to decide who needs a developmental writing class and who should take the regular writing course.
You are expected to prepare a presentation in PowerPoint that offers several possible traditional and nontraditional assessment instruments, including the strengths and weaknesses of each and the impact of the instrument on the selected sample population.
Be sure to add brief but informational notes to key slides. Add citations as necessary to slides, and create one o
two slides at the end that include your Reference list. Use APA format for citations and references and follow PowerPoint guidelines for effective presentation of ideas.
Be sure to include:
· A purpose statement for the plan
· Design 2 formative assessment assignments aligned with the objective(s).
· Design 1 summative assessment assignment aligned with the objective(s).
· Develop formative and summative rubrics for judging the data collected from the formative and summative assessments to evaluate student work for the assessment assignments.
· Defend the validity and reliability of the assessment instruments you have designed.
· Develop a detailed assessment and evaluation plan, including the time line for assessment and evaluation strategies, identification of individuals who will conduct the assessment and evaluation (including an explanati
of the differences between assessment and evaluation), and the threshold to determine how students will be assigned to each class.
