SELF-ASSESSMENT OF LEADERSHIP, COLLABORATION AND ETHICS
Self-Assessment of Leadership, Collaboration, and Ethics
A good definition of leadership is the ability of an individual or group of individuals to influence and execute strategic plans and have a set of behaviors used to align their collective direction. A leader's three essential roles are motivator, communicator, and uniter. Leaders are also accountable for their actions as well as the actions of their employees. There are 5C’s of leadership accountability: having a Common purpose, promoting Clear Communication and alignment with the organization’s goals, they must Coach and Collaborating well, and knowing their actions have Consequences with or without results. [ CITATION JWi23 \l 1033 ]
The first section of this assessment will address leadership types and forms of communication and collaboration. The second part of this assessment will address ethics and their importance. This assessment will answer questions provided by Western Medical Enterprises.
Section 1: Leadership and Collaboration Experience
Four years ago, as I worked in the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit)/Recovery Room of Smilow Cancer Hospital, I was asked to be on a committee of peers reviewing the results of the Press Ganey survey sent to patients after surgery. Smilow Cancer Hospital, aka North Pavilion, is
one of four hospitals in the Yale New Haven Hospital York Street Campus, a Level 1 Magnet Standings Hospital. The campus comprises four hospitals: North-Smilow Cancer Hospital, South
-Adult Trauma, General Medicine and Cardiac, East–Ambulatory/One Day Surgery, and General
Medicine and West-Yale’s Children Hospital. The third floor where I work is predominately surgery, recovery rooms, pathology, and the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. The Press Ganey Survey is based on the patient’s experience in the Perioperative system and the family’s experience utilizing
the Family Surgical Lounge Adult and Children section.

administration wanted the committee to analyze the survey’s below-average scores when asked about the Surgical Lounges. While the survey takers had no issues with the staff, environment, or
service, the low scores occurred when asked about general information and availability. Common
survey responses included “large, confusing facility,” “did not know where to go to the bathroom
despite signage,” or “had no idea there were food vendors outside aside from the Café.” The committee members included the Manager of the PACU nurses, nurses, and me, representing the administrative staff from the various pavilions.
The committee's object was to create and adapt an informational brochure that could be given to families of patients having surgery and waiting in one of the two lounges. This brochure
would answer commonly asked questions and reflect complaints about the Press Ganey Survey disclosed. Some questions were and our fix:
Where are the elevators, café, and bathroom locations – Map of Facility.
Coffee shop hours – times of café opening and closing.
Local restaurants and street vendors.
Important hospital telephone numbers
These are just a few questions we thought to include once the brochure was approved. It could be modified and adjusted based on need. The committee needed an actual leader, as we were all leaders within the section of the committee we were representing. I did utilize a transformational type of leadership for my part. That type of leadership recognizes the need for change, develops a vision to drive the change through inspiration, and engages in positive behavior to improve the commitment to the organization’s members. [ CITATION Moh221 \l 1033 ] Understanding this concept, each committee member shared the Press Ganey results and

dilemma with the members of their departments and asked for input to help solve this issue. The teams were proud of their contributions, as the information was valuable, and everyone felt a sense of accomplishment.
Influential leaders must also maintain time management for projects like these to be successful and cost-effective. The timeline for the project was tight because we had to design the brochure and incorporate all the information we agreed was pertinent to include before sending it
off to marketing for approval and development. Communication was key throughout the entire project, but especially with the Go Live deadline looming, and essential communication between the committee and the marketing department had to be clear and concise. As a leader/member of the committee, we were all responsible for our department’s precise and timely completion of assigned tasks. Cooperation and collaboration were essential in team building trust for completing the project. This project succeeded because it brought different departments together, working toward a common goal. Once the brochure went live, the committee again utilized the Press Ganey survey to gauge what type of feedback through specific questions on the survey. Based on the Survey feedback, the brochure was a huge success! The survey asked patients and families if it was helpful and relieved some of the stress the families faced in an unfamiliar environment during a stressful time. Initially, we offered the brochure in paper format because it was an easy grab, but later, we also had a QR Code for the more tech-savvy.
Section 2: Ethics Experience
As an operating room nurse, I have faced ethical challenges that directly impact my patient’s well-being, especially during surgery, where the patient is in a compromised position, and I am their advocate. Furthermore, I must always refer to the American Nursing Association’s
SELF-ASSESSMENT OF LEADERSHIP, COLLABORATION AND ETHICS
Code of Ethics to effectively handle these situations. [ CITATION Ame15 \l 1033 ] The Code of Ethics comprises four principles: Autonomy, Justice, Beneficence, and Nonmaleficence with interpretative statements. Autonomy is respect for the patient’s right to self-determination. Justice is to treat all people equally and equitably. Beneficence is our duty to “do good.” Lastly, Nonmaleficence is our duty to “not do bad.” The Code of Ethics and these principles set the bar for our behaviors and decision-making with integrity and honesty. An ethical dilemma arises when one or more moral principles are broken.
Working in the medical field, our fundamental goal is to maintain patient safety while conducting ourselves in a manner that promotes professional behavior with honesty, integrity, respect, equity, fairness, and good faith. [ CITATION Boa221 \l 1033 ] While our project did not directly impact patient care, it did affect the families of the patients having surgery. The principle
of Beneficence is not only to the patient but also to the family members. As healthcare providers,
we make all efforts for the well-being of all and protect all from harm. Additionally, the ethical principle of Justice with its meaning of equal share to everyone, it was our duty to keep the cost down in producing the brochure so any overspending would not be absorbed into patient care costs during billing. Marketing a new product like the brochure had to be cost-effective and economical besides being helpful to the families. We utilized the whole team in various tasks like
design, research, and brochure writing to keep the cost down. By doing this, we saved the marketing department time and expense, so the only thing we needed from the marketing department was approval and printing the finalized copy.
Conclusion
Being a part of a committee comprised of different leaders, leadership styles, and different forms of decision-making, we quickly became vital for the project to be successful;

communication was vital. Individually, we rallied our departments to provide valuable input to the project, which helped build successful team camaraderie. According to the Nordic College of Caring Science article, if the leader exhibits idealized attributes authentically, the followers emulate the leader’s behavior and are committed to achieving the leader’s vision. [ CITATION Out09 \l 1033 ] As responsible leaders, we set the example to ensure ethical behaviors. A leader is motivating, compassionate, and coordinated to improve their team members’ environment and work life. [ CITATION BWM23 \l 1033 ] Being this kind of leader was rewarding during this project and set the bar for the kind of leader I will always strive to be.
