Guiding children’s behavior is something done throughout the day not just when the child acts in
a way that is unacceptable.
Positive guidance is based on building up a child’s self
-control and
on us teaching them how to appropriately deal with situations and emotions so that they can
make better choices in the future. We can guide behavior by establishing predictable routines,
setting clear rules with children and modeling kindness and respect. We should also be attentive
and aware of what is going on.
As an educator, when I use positive guidance, I encourage and try to teach the child to build the
social skills and self-control necessary for future challenges. Along the way there will definitely
mistakes that the children will do and that is ok as we just keep on encouraging them to try till,
they get it right. What is most important is that I do not take the misbehavior personally and
rather consider it as a learning opportunity created. Each child has the potential to learn correct
behavior and that is with guidance and practice.
Working at the IBI Behavioral Services has taught me a lot on a personal level on how to use
positive reinforcement techniques to correct the child’s behavior on the long run such as using
positive phrasing, offering choices, presenting problem-solving and creating an environment
conducive to the behaviors that children are expected to exhibit.
An example was when
child X
stopped following
the teacher’s directions. We used the
following positive guidance strategies:
1.
Used simple positive reminders:
Children with behavioral issues have a short attention
span and it is necessary to use lots of reminders with them to clarify and reinforce limits.
2.
Got the child’s attention in a respectful way:
we approached the child, stated his name
and got down to his eye level. We spoke to him in a soft, kind tone of voice which lets
him know that we care for him and made sure to use hand signs and referred to the visual
aids on his desk to make good choices for himself.
3.
Set limits in a positive way and say what is expected:
we focused on what needs to be
done rather than what should not be done to reinforce what is appropriate and used a
statement instead of a question to establish the limits of the expected behavior so that the
child does not think he has a choice. So, we notified
child X
that is time to put the
markers away and pay attention to teacher instead of “do not color and pay attention”.
4.
Reinforced appropriate behavior:
acknowledged when child X behaved appropriately
and praised him.
Through positive reinforcement and guidance, we were able to support
child X
’s
self-control and
development of empathy and social competence, while preserving the child’s sense of worth,
autonomy, positive inclusion in the group and trust in the education
(ELECT)
. We helped him
build self-confidence and encouraged him to repeat appropriate behaviors.
