Part 1: Assessment of Cultural Issues in Healthcare
Cultural diversity plays a significant role in the delivery and outcomes of healthcare in the
United States. Two key cultural issues that impact healthcare quality, cost, and Health
Information Management (HIM) are generational and economic status diversity.
Generational Diversity:
Generational diversity refers to the differences in values, beliefs, and healthcare preferences
among different age groups. In healthcare, this can lead to variations in healthcare utilization,
treatment decisions, and health information management.
Impact on Healthcare Quality: Different generations may have varying attitudes towards
healthcare practices. For example, older generations may have a preference for traditional
healthcare, while younger generations may be more open to technological advancements. This
can influence healthcare decisions and the quality of care received.
Impact on Healthcare Cost: Generational diversity can also affect healthcare costs. Older
generations often require more healthcare services due to age-related health issues, leading to
higher costs. Younger generations may opt for preventive measures, potentially reducing
healthcare expenses in the long run.
Impact on HIM: HIM professionals must adapt to generational differences in health record
management. For instance, older generations may prefer paper-based records, while younger
generations expect electronic health records. Managing both effectively is essential.
Economic Status Diversity:
Economic status diversity in healthcare refers to disparities in access to healthcare services,
treatment outcomes, and health information management due to differing economic resources.
Impact on Healthcare Quality: Economic disparities can result in unequal access to quality
healthcare. Those with lower economic status may face barriers to accessing care, leading to
delayed diagnoses and poorer health outcomes.
Impact on Healthcare Cost: Economic status diversity contributes to the overall cost of
healthcare. Individuals with limited economic resources may rely on public healthcare programs,
which can strain the healthcare system and increase overall costs.
Impact on HIM: Economic status disparities can result in variations in the completeness and
accuracy of health records. Those with better economic resources may access regular healthcare
and maintain up-to-date health records, while others may not have the same access.
