Sustainability Initiative – Patient Care 3 Sustainability Initiative – Patient Care Initiating an environmentally friendly proposal by recycling blue wraps at Banner University Medical Center operating rooms will reduce waste and waste management costs. The blue wraps will be reused which will prevent millions of blue wraps from ending up in landfills each year. This sustainability project involves disposing of blue wraps in a recycling bin instead of throwing them in the waste bin. The project also involves reusing the blues wraps and eliminating their one time use by creating different products. In disposing the blue wraps in a recycling bin, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste and the amount of trash hauled to landfills. Currently our hospitals are discarding 255 million pounds of bule wrap each year[ CITATION Hea23 \l 1033 ]. The initiative will help reduce waste, save on costs, and create a positive image in the eyes of the community. Recycling the blue wraps will reduce environmental footprint and it will extend the life of blue wraps. Reducing the amount of blue wraps that are taken to landfills will reduce the cost of hauling. Recycling blue wraps will also benefit the community and the environment. How it impacts our community is it will reduce the contribution to global warming by 77%. Also, in recycling blue wraps it reduces the water used by 51% as they will be reused to create different products. Disposing blue wraps in a recycling bin will reduce energy consumption by 90% [ CITATION Cir23 \l 1033 ]. The money that is saved from this initiative could be used for other departments. This initiative will not have any effects on the other department’s current budget or expenses, however the money that is saved from recycling blue wraps could be used to provide better services. The revenue that is saved from recycling blue wraps could be used to expand services. We currently have a department for women’s health and the revenue could be used to help

Sustainability Initiative – Patient Care 4 expand or improve current services. This can also be used for other departments such as mental health services, emergency departments, or our inpatient services. The initiative could potentially save the hospital up to $30,000 a year[ CITATION Cir23 \l 1033 ]. The recycled blue wrap could be reused as scrubs, fractured bedpan, pontoon bedpan, wash bins, gallon recycling bins, or 45- gallon recycling bins.
