Roxy Shortridge NRSE 6002 – 911 Dr. Sharon Bigger 19 October 2023 Discussion Board Module 4 H.R. 3520: Veteran Care Improvement Act of 2023 is the policy that I have chosen. The policy was introduced on May 18 th , 2023. This policy will aim to increase the accessibility of the services that the Veterans Affairs (VA) Department of Health provides to veterans. (Miller-Meeks, 2022). It will also aim to make the VA more accountable and responsible for the veteran’s healthcare needs. U.S. Representatives Mariannette Miller- Meeks is who has developed this policy. She is the chairwoman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health. This policy is extremely important to those who are veterans and have served our country. Veterans are faced with complex medical issues due to their exposures. Many veterans have chronic conditions that need frequent management and treatment adjustments. This policy will allow for veterans to receive care from the VA in a more seamless manner. The kingdon model consists of three streams which are problem, policy, politics, and the window of opportunity. (Milstead & Shortridge, p. 23, 2019). My chosen policy is related to the kingdon model in all four elements. It is related to the problem stream by the policy wanting to make the VA more accountable for the healthcare it is providing to veterans. It is related to the policy stream by involving the community such as the DAV and wounded warriors in assisting veterans in receiving their care through the VA. My policy is specifically related to the politics element as the department of veteran’s affairs
is a federally funded program. This is related as it is dependent on election results and the political party in the office. It is related to the window of opportunity as it integrates all three streams and aims to improve the care of veterans overall. It is imperative as a healthcare provider to understand the kingdon model and how it relates to current policies in the healthcare system. References Miller-Meeks, M. (2022, March 24).
