Visit the AHIMA Website at
www.ahima.org
and research the eligibility requirements for the
following Certification examination(s) and the continuing education requirement(s) for
maintaining each credential. What similarities and differences do you see?
(15 points)
●
Some of the similarities I see for the certification examinations are for any credential you have to
complete some type of approved program by AHIMA. Also you have to have at least a High school
diploma or GED education and experience in the Health care field. Another similarity I noticed was
that you also have to some type of continuing education every 2 years in order to stay certified.
Some of the differences I see are the credentials have different continuing educatuion
requirements for example the RHIT,CCA,CCS/CCS-P require 20 CEU credits every 2 years while
CHDA and CHPS are required to have 30 CEU credits every 2 years. I noticed that certain
credentials have different requirements for levels of education like for example the RHIT credential
requires a Associate degree of a HIM program and CHDS requires a Bachelor's degree or higher.

2.
You have been asked what the HIM profession is by a friend. How will you explain it? Justify
why you selected it as your future career.
(5 points)
●
A HIM professional is some one who links the patient, physicians, nurses, and the patients other
healthcare team together by managing the patients health information in one place. So that
patients can have the best quality care from their healthcare team without a HIM professional we
would have missed information in patient's records and often causes a lot of different mistakes that
can potentially be fatal to patients. They are vital to daily operations of the patient's health
information and electronic health record to make sure they are complete, accurate and protected.
