As my preceptor expressed through her experiences of being a teacher within the public school system, she indicated that the source of vaping within our public school system starts within the middle school. She explained that the middle school students think that these devices are “cool” and starts at a younger age and trickles “upwards” into the high school. Whereas in my project focused more in the high school setting. To address this, I would focus more on the middle school students (population) and mending the material to fit their developmental age more appropriately to yield a better outcome. Another alteration that I would change in this project would be appeal of presenting this material. My preceptor did express the concern for students to dismiss the information, as described in one of my barriers. In response to addressing this barrier, I would add more appealing elements to the poster to “catch” the viewer’s attention. These elements could encompass the use of various learning styles: visual, audio, and kinesthetic. Visual elements would be utilized in the form of pictures-side by side comparison (Example: Normal lungs compared to damaged lungs from the use of e-cigarettes). Audio learning styles could be depicted with how e-cigarettes cause people to not be as physically fit (example: two people running, the person who vapes is unable to run a far and is out of breath compared to the other person who does not vape). The kinesthetic side of learning would incorporate the use of interactive elements of how the alveoli within the lungs become less elastic from the exposure of the chemicals. To gain additional insight and resources to aid the vaping epidemic within the adolescent population, I would collaborate with our councilors and our community sponsors that help fund school projects. The incorporation of counselors allows for students to have access to mental health services as they experience the withdraw side effects of nicotine or the potential for being bullied/shunned for not participating in the peer activity of vaping. The use of community sponsors could be utilized in two different ways depending on the community sponsorship. If it is a sponsor from a nonhealthcare business, then they could help aid us fund these interventions, all while promoting their
business. Additionally, the funds from the businesses could be allocated in funding additional community events within the school system from local businesses within the healthcare sector. Through the use of their services, we would not only provide age- specific professional help, but also interventional services from these healthcare professionals.
