Workplace Wellness at Starfish Resorts Part 3: Working with Experiment Data Start analyzing the experimental program (ExperimentDatasheet) . 1. What are the mean and median health spending across all people in ExperimentDatasheet ? 2. What is the average health spending across of all people who were assigned to participate in the wellness program? 3. What is the average health spending across of all people who were assigned to not participate in the wellness program? 4. Why might the results from the experimental program di@er from the Pilot? 5. What do you conclude from the experiment? Stop-loss insurance is coverage that helps protect the employer from having to bear the cost of catastrophically large claims by reimbursing the employer for any individual’s claims that exceed a threshold. Starfish Resorts has purchased a stop-loss insurance plan that covers any health care costs an individual incurs beyond $20,000. One question you have is whether the wellness program a@ected the use of stop-loss insurance and whether the wellness program saves money after accounting for this insurance. Create a new variable, “ExceedsStopLoss”, recording for each individual whether they exceeded the stop-loss amount (=1 if they exceeded it, =0 if not). Create another variable named “EmployerCost” that is equal to the healthcare costs for each individual, or the stop-loss amount, whichever is smaller. 1. How many people exceeded the stop-loss? 2. What is the average EmployerCost ? 3. Use a Pivot Table to summarize the number of people who exceeded the stop- loss broken down by whether they were assigned to participate in the wellness program. 4. Is the fraction of people whose spending exceeded the stop-loss higher or lower among people required to participate in the wellness program? 5. What is EmployerCost among people assigned to participate in the wellness program? 6. What is EmployerCost among people not assigned to participate in the wellness program? 7. Revisit the results on health care spending. Does the wellness program become more or less attractive for the firm, once we account for the stop-loss insurance?
