NEURO 201 Group Presentation Guidelines Students will work in a group to develop a 15-minute presentation on a disease of the nervous system based on the list below. Multiple groups can select the same topic, but should work independently with their own groups to submit their recorded presentation. This project will require time outside of the classroom, so plan accordingly with your group. You may choose to meet at a set time using Zoom, or collaborate by email with your group to work together on the presentation. All presentations must be recorded and submitted to Canvas no later than Midnight on November 18 th , 2022 . Every member is expected to contribute equally in the preparation and in the presentation. In order to make sure this happens, adapt a list of tasks and assign each one to a member of the group with a deadline. Also outline which parts of the presentation each member will present. Be strict with your deadlines to respect your peers. If you are having significant problems with a group member, please reach out to the instructor for guidance. Students will be graded based on the rubric below. While one person in the group may cover one area, and another cover a different area, the individual student will be graded based on their mastery of the topic and confidence in presenting. Therefore, it is imperative that all students work together to make sure that the slides presented cover all of the necessary components described below. The presentation should provide an overview of the neuroscience behind the disorder and relate it to material learned during the course to describe in depth the mechanisms known about the cause of the disorder and treatments available. Be creative and have fun! Diseases of the Nervous System List 1. Alzheimer’s Disease 2. Anxiety Disorder 3. Autism 4. Bipolar Disorder 5. Epilepsy 6. Major Depression 7. Multiple Sclerosis 8. Parkinson’s Disease 9. Schizophrenia 10.Stroke
Group Presentation Grading Rubric Background of the Topic: Details on the history of the topic are introduced in a logical order providing a condensed but detailed overview. The information provided makes sense based on the topic chosen and further neuroscience discussed. Students should be able to follow the presentation and understand the topic based on the background. 2 points - Below Expectations 4 points - Mostly Meets Expectations 6 points - Meets Expectations 8 points - Above Expectations 10 points - Exceeds Expectations Underlying Neuroscience: Known mechanisms of the disorder and treatment options from research should be provided. This may overlap with the background information. Be sure to explain the theories if there are no exact mechanisms (there likely are not), and try to use this as a way to link the topic to what has been learned throughout the semester. 2 points - Below Expectations 4 points - Mostly Meets Expectations 6 points - Meets Expectations 8 points - Above Expectations 10 points - Exceeds Expectations Linked to Course Material: The course material should be brought up throughout the entire presentation. You don’t need to define every detail, but explain it as if you are presenting to someone who has never taken a neuroscience course before. Perhaps you’ll need to explain synaptic transmission, action potentials or pharmacology of a receptor in order to teach about your topic’s mechanisms. 2 points - Below Expectations 4 points - Mostly Meets Expectations 6 points - Meets Expectations 8 points - Above Expectations 10 points - Exceeds Expectations Organization and Flow of the Presentation: The presentation should move in a logical order that is easy to follow and flows well. The content should be delivered in a way that is not confusing and any background information is well explained before moving on to more complex concepts. It should be professional and practiced with a slow and steady pace. 2 points - Below Expectations 4 points - Mostly Meets Expectations 6 points - Meets Expectations 8 points - Above Expectations 10 points - Exceeds Expectations Mastery of the Subject and Confidence in Presentation: Each group member is expected to participate and present a portion of the presentation. This part of the grading rubric is based on the individual student. Practice to feel comfortable and confident so that it is clear that you have a strong understanding of the content. Groups are encouraged to run through their presentation together at least once to ensure everyone is comfortable and the timing is within limits (15 minutes +/- 2 minutes) 4 points - Below Expectations 8 points - Mostly Meets Expectations 12 points - Meets Expectations 16 points - Above Expectations 20 points - Exceeds Expectations Total Score = ____ / 60 points
