Alyssa,
Great post this week! I thought you gave great insights and greatly added to this week’s
discussion post. It sounds like you have a good idea on what kind of organization you would like
to work. I like the three performance management strategies you picked. I think that patient
satisfaction surveys are so important in every healthcare industry. Our job is to take care of
people and we want their honest feedback so we can make positive changes.
Quality indicators
are also very important to track. Things such as medication errors must be tracked to
improve our care as well, because things such as medical errors are unacceptable. I like how
you have financial performance metrics, because our first priority should be to our patients,
but we must take care of our companies and this where that comes into play. I look forward to
reading more of your posts.

The healthcare setting in healthcare administration encompasses the management and
coordination of healthcare services within various healthcare organizations such as hospitals,
clinics, long-term care facilities, and health systems. I desire to work in this setting to earn
more experience and to build more opportunities for myself and I want to see the growth and
improvement as I learn while being in this healthcare setting. It will help me build a stronger
understanding of the industry and the responsibilities I will hold in this job, gaining more
experience will surely help push my confidence to work and perform better. Healthcare
administrators are responsible for overseeing the operational and strategic aspects of these
organizations to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services. A common strategic goal
in the healthcare setting is to improve patient satisfaction and experience. This goal is crucial
as it reflects the overall quality of care provided and contributes to patient loyalty, reputation,
and financial sustainability.
Here are three performance management measures and corresponding strategies that may
be used to measure progress towards this goal:
1.
Patient Satisfaction Surveys: Administering structured surveys to patients to assess
their satisfaction with various aspects of their healthcare experience, including
communication, accessibility, responsiveness, and quality of care. Strategies to
achieve higher patient satisfaction may include improving communication between
healthcare providers and patients, ensuring timely access to care, implementing
patient-centered care models, and enhancing the physical environment of healthcare
facilities.
2.
Quality of Care Indicators: Monitoring and analyzing quality of care indicators such as
the rate of healthcare-acquired infections, medication errors, readmission rates, and
compliance with clinical guidelines. Implementing evidence-based protocols,
enhancing staff training and education, strengthening quality assurance programs,
and utilizing technology solutions can help improve these indicators and enhance
overall care quality.
3.
Financial Performance Metrics: Assessing financial performance metrics, such as
revenue growth, cost containment, and efficient resource utilization. Strategies to
improve financial performance may include optimizing revenue cycles, negotiating
favorable contracts with insurance providers, implementing cost-saving measures,
streamlining operational processes, and leveraging data analytics to identify areas for
improvement.

Carrie,
This sucks an excellent post. It is well written and gives great insight on this week’s topic and
enhanced this week’s talks. That is great that you want to work for the VA and help make a
change. The VA is terrible at providing high quality care and in a timely manner. I request for an
appointment with a primary doctor to be seen for worsening back pain. I requested to be seen in
the first week October and I still have not heard back from them about being able to see my
provider. Your other performance management measure are really good as well patient
satisfaction and enhancing healthcare are so important.

Working with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a common strategic goal may be to
enhance the delivery of healthcare services to veterans, ensuring they receive high-quality
and timely care. This aligns with the VA's mission to provide comprehensive and
compassionate care to veterans. Here are three performance management measures and
corresponding strategies to achieve this goal:
1.
Reducing Wait Times for Medical Appointments:
o
Performance Measure:
Average wait time for primary care and specialty
appointments.
o
Strategy:
Implement an appointment scheduling system that optimizes
appointment availability, ensures efficient use of resources, and utilizes
technology to streamline the scheduling process. Hiring additional healthcare
providers to meet the demand and employing telehealth services can help
reduce wait times.
1.
Improving Patient Satisfaction:
o
Performance Measure:
Patient satisfaction scores through surveys and
feedback.
o
Strategy:
Implement patient-centered care initiatives, focusing on
communication, accessibility, and personalized care. This may involve training
healthcare providers in patient communication skills, utilizing patient feedback
to improve continuously, and incorporating technology solutions that enhance
patient experience, such as online appointment scheduling and telehealth
options.
1.
Enhancing Health Outcomes:
o
Performance Measure:
Health outcomes for common conditions among
veterans (e.g., diabetes management, mental health treatment outcomes).
o
Strategy:
Implement evidence-based practices and treatment protocols to
ensure consistent and effective care. Invest in training and professional
development for healthcare staff to stay current with best practices. Utilize
health information systems to track patient outcomes, identify areas for
improvement, and implement quality improvement initiatives. Collaborate with
research institutions to stay at the forefront of medical advancements and
incorporate innovative treatments into routine care.
These strategies and performance measures align with the overarching goal of improving
healthcare services for veterans within the VA system. Regular monitoring and assessment of
these measures will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the strategies and help
guide ongoing improvements in service delivery.
