Communicating and Collaborating To address the needs of students, it is critical that home and school continue to collaborate and communicate. Here are three ways that this can be accomplished: 1. Conferences: arranged conferences to discuss problems, recognize successes, and update parents on student development while creating a plan for the future. 2. Traveling Notebook: Can be used to write quick communications by teachers and parents. Allows teachers and parents to monitor their individual actions with the learner. 3. Using Technology: Informing parents and teachers via text, phone conversations, emails, and other messaging apps. Immediate and real-time information rather than having to wait for a scheduled meeting or the return of a notebook. References Hallahan, D. P., Kauffman, J. M., & Pullen, P. C. (2018). ` What is Specific Learning Disability? “Specific Learning Disability means a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. Specific learning disability does not include learning problems that are primarily the result of: visual, hearing, or motor disabilities; intellectual disability; serious emotional disability; cultural factors; environmental or economic disadvantage; or limited English proficiency” (Specific Learning Disability (SLD) | CDE, n.d.). Instructional Strategies Here are three examples of what teachers may use in the classroom to support students with SLD: 1. Modeling: “I Do, We Do, You Do” to support learning. Teachers must recognize when a student is prepared to try something on their own. 2. Multisensory Instruction: supporting learning through touch, movement, sight, and hearing. 3. Universal Design for Learning Strategies: several methods for obtaining learning and tools for success. Family Interventions Families can help their SLD students at home. Here are three suggestions: 1. Establish and maintain clear expectations: Set clear expectations and consequences and commit to them. Remaining consistent will guarantee success. 2. Provide Advice for Self-Sufficiency: For things like nighttime routines, provide a checklist or step-by-step instructions. Provide assistance and then slowly decrease it until the person achieves independence. 3. Create Structure: establish routines and try your best to stick to them.
