Chapter 8: the impact of society on family decisions Individuals and the tax system Primary types of tax benefits: - Income tax: taxes made on income you make benefit that comes around every year per pay check and see if you get anything back the next year - Social security: once you become to retirement age you get a monthly benefit dictated on how much you put into the system - Medicare: healthcare for the elderly, 65 of age and older Federal taxes support - Public benefits: benefits open to the public Ex: SNAP, public housing (section 8), WIC - Military expenses: veterans receive medical assistance, education assistance, housing, etc - Federal funded programs: indirectly impacted by Ex: NASA directly impacted by ex: agricultural State taxes fund - public programs ex: voucher system, state highway administration (gets trash off highways) - community programs: communities may ask for a state grant for help with a neighborhood, programs for a community park or recycle day - parks and public resources: state parks, resources that help people with their property taxes, libraries Benefits of social security taxes Deferred benefits include: - Retirement benefits Born before 1938, retirement age is 65 and after 1960 retirement age is 67
- Disability benefits Prospective recipient must wait 6 months to receive benefits and undergo and evaluation to document the disability - Family and survivor benefits Benefits for care for those under 18 who lose their parents due to death OASDI/EE: Old Age Survivor Disability Insurance Employer Employee Medicare - Health insurance for individuals that are 65 years of age or older - Employers pay 1.45% of their income - Employers pay 1.45% to match emplyers Public programs - Tax dollars are support and financing - Higher level accountability as fairness, equity, and distribution - Require some degree of qualification for families to qualify Private programs - Funded through contributions and donations - More or less discriminatory due to the goals of the organization - Require some degree of qualification for families to qualify St. Jude’s Children Hospital National Negro College Fund Habitat for Humanity Ways to Work Franciscan Center Services dedicated for the elderly - Home delivered meals ( meals on wheels) - Housing: nursing homes, retirement communities, senior housing buildings - Food and nutrition programs: eating together - Transportation: mobility services to transport to health and medical appointments - Adult day care - Legal services: help seniors get wills - Health promotion programs : smoking sensation classes, screenings 2
