Unit 05: Alcohol and Tobacco Use - I learned that binge drinking for women is defined as having four drinks in a row and five drinks for men. This was new
information to me, and I learned that I binge drink more often than I thought. I drink 4 or 5 drinks pretty much every time I go out or party. The unit talks about binge drinking being the leading cause of preventable death among undergraduate students and a significant threat to student health and well-being. This leads me to take this more seriously and watch my drinking habits more. 2. Unit 06: Drug Use and Misuse, in the textbook, page 296, under energy drinks, talks about how energy drinks are reportedly used by college and university students to alleviate hangovers, increase energy for studying, and increase alertness. However, the potential health dangers are frequently unknown to the students. I saw that over half of the university students in the research by McGaughey, Jr. et al. who consumed energy drinks reported having jolt and crash episodes. Heart palpitations were experienced by about 44% of people. Canadian teens and young adults were polled by Hammond et al. to find out the negative effects of energy drinks. They discovered that among the young people who answered the study, 55% had encountered at least one unfavourable event. Nearly 25% of participants suffered rapid heartbeats, 24% had sleep issues, 18% had headaches, and 5% had other symptoms. This was crazy to learn because I drink energy drinks frequently, and I was under the impression that those side effects were very uncommon and rare. 3. Being stressed can make you crave comfort foods - After reading Unit 4 on Personal Stress Management and watching the video about the physical effects of stress on the body. I learned that cortisol could increase your appetite as it tells your body to replenish your energy stores with energy-dense foods and carbs, causing you to crave comfort foods. This causes you to put on visceral or deep-belly fat 4. In unit 7: personal nutrition, the TedTalk on how the food you eat affects your brain taught me so much new information. I learned that of the fats in your brain, Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids that have been linked to preventing degenerative brain conditions. Therefore, eating Omega-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and fatty fish is crucial to the creation and maintenance of cell membranes. While other fats, such as trans and saturated fats, may compromise brain health. 5. Unit 09: Social Support and Relationship - I learned about Chapman’s 5 Love Languages. After completing the assessment, I discovered that my love languages are words of affirmation and quality time. This helped a lot because I can reflect on past relationships and see that we had different love languages, which sometimes led to conflict. Our partner may not prefer to or feel most comfortable communicating love in the same way that we do, and vice versa. But if we recognize this, we may work to broaden our love languages and improve how we express our emotions.
6. Unit 03: Psychosocial Health (Mental Health) - I learned that confidence and consistency are key to being successful. The video about strengthening your self-esteem describes the third tip to practice failure - this means to keep trying anyway, even after you fail, as you will be better equipped to respond to challenges and setbacks in a constructive way. This teaches the skill of perseverance and trying different strategies to accomplish something. 7. Unit 08: Physical Activity for Fitness and Health - from the video titled “Does Stretching/Warming Up Actually Help?”. I learned the importance of stretching. I lift weights six times a week and am guilty of rarely stretching. It is important to warm up to reduce the risk of injuries. Also, slowly increasing physical intensity before a sport increases muscle temperature and allows your muscles to contract more forcefully, which means more strength and power. 8. Unit 12: Spiritual Health - I learned that I could battle my test anxiety by practicing mindfulness. The article talked about the law student’s experience with severe stress and test anxiety. I found myself relating to her as I also struggle with excessively stressing, which deteriorates my test performance. However, I also plan on attending law school like her. Therefore, I need to address my test anxiety issue as in law school, the only method of examination is exams. I need to start meditating for 10-20 minutes a day and come up with a system for dealing with anxiety-inducing situations. 9. Unit 10: Gender, Sexuality, and Sexual Health - I learned the difference between gender expression and gender identity. Before reading this unit, I thought that they were the same thing, that a person’s gender identity is their expression. However, I learned that gender identity is a person's self-identified sense of being male, female, neither, or both. Whereas gender expression is the external appearance, dress, mannerisms, and behaviour through which individuals present their gender identity, or the gender they would like to appear as. 10. Unit 11: Environmental Health - I learned that my ecological footprint is huge by doing the Global Footprint Network Calculator. I found out that If everyone lived like me, we would need 5.1 Earths. This has shown me that I need to be more conscious of my global footprint, as we only have one Earth and must take care of it. I learned there is a lot I can do to improve it. I could start carpooling with friends whenever possible. Also, turning off lights and appliances before I leave my house to minimize usage.
