2 National Institutes of Health (NIH) The importance of this organization is to assist guidance to programs to help enhance our nation’s health by constantly assessing and performing research. This helps the citizens of the United States live and maintain the healthiest lifestyle to the best of their ability, attempt to lessen deadly diseases or provide research/resources on disease, and provide continuous education in the medical and science fields along with having readily available information for public access. NIH’s mission is “to seek fundamental knowledge about nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). The overview of this organization activities includes constant growth and research in several areas. Some of these areas include what causes diseases and how to properly diagnose, prevent and cure them, studying the changes in human growth and development, knowledge in mental health, addiction, and physical disorders and what the effects of environmental contaminants have on human life/development. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) The importance of this organization is to provide strict safety regulations for employees that employers must follow. It is the employer’s responsibility to provide a safe working environment. If there is a hazardous situation or safety regulation failure it is up to the employer to fix it per OSHA rules and regulations. Employers also must provide proper safety equipment for their employees.
3 OSHA’s mission is “With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health and Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance” (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2022). The overview of this organization’s activities includes setting specific standards for employers to follow for the safety of their employees. Some of these standards include proper falling equipment (safety harness or lifelines), prevention for cave-in’s, proper safety for workers who enter confined places, providing proper equipment to prevent exposure to high levels of noise that can be damaging and proper guards on machinery. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) The importance of this organization is to diligently work around the clock to protect America health and safety from all types of diseases. Whether the diseases start in America or aboard, are curable or preventable or an error or attack. The CDC executes their knowledge and research to fight these diseases while educating America to be able to do the same. CDC increases the health of security of our nation. As the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats and responds when they arise” (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.).

4 The overview of this organization activities includes constant watch for new health threats and provide proper responses, prioritizing health threats that can cause death and disability to Americans, utilizing science and technology to help prevention and understanding of disease and supplying knowledge to communities with understanding of diseases and how to prevent them to the best of our abilities. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) The importance of this organization is to provide updated research on America’s health care system and how they may improve the quality and safety of it, train the health care providers on new materials and discoveries and how to imply them into the system and provide measurements and statistics gathered by America’s health care system. The AHRQ’s mission is “The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used” (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2022). The overview of this organization’s activities includes overseeing antibiotic usage, bettering healthcare of individuals with several chronic illnesses and continual research on how to provide resources for opioid addictions in rural communities. Indian Health Service (IHS)
5 The importance of this organization is to continually put effort into accreditation of facilities, provide services and knowledge for bettering experience and safety for patients and assist in early identification of risks and how to pass along the knowledge. The IHS’s mission is “To raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) to the highest level. To help realize this mission, improving the quality of care is an HIS priority” (Indian Health Service, n.d.). The overview of this organization’s activities includes assisting with transitions including credentialing and safety reporting systems, maintain a threshold of patient experience of care utilizing electronic tablets for surveying and providing resources for continual education for improvement in the health care system. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) The importance of this organization is to continually change with our nation. Since 1906 the FDA has kept up with social, economic, political, and legal changes in our nation. This companies’ ability to constantly evolve and keep up with our nation allows them to provide up-to-date information to the public and maintain proper regulations on the topics they overlook. The FDA’s mission is “The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices; and by ensuring the safety of our
6 nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2018). The overview of this organization’s activities is to assist guidance to programs to help enhance our nation’s health by constantly assessing and regulating the following for the safety of our nation: Foods, drugs, biologics, medical devices, electronics products that give off radiation, cosmetics, veterinary products, tobacco and much more.
