Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Plan Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Plans Heart failure is a serious condition for which there is no cure, but many people can still live an enjoyable life when it is managed with medications and a healthy lifestyle. “Heart failure” can sound like the heart is no longer working, but it actually means the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should. Our body depends on the heart's pumping action to deliver oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the rest of the body. Some conditions that can cause heart failure are narrowing of the arteries, high blood pressure, heart valve disease, congenital heart defects, arrhythmias, heavy alcohol use, illegal drugs, chemotherapy medicines, or other long-term diseases that may contribute to chronic failure (2023). Pathophysiology of Heart Disease Heart failure occurs when the heart muscles become weak or stiff gradually causing the heart chambers to stretch and get bigger. Due to the heart muscle alternations, the heart is not able to pump sufficient blood, resulting in the rest of the body not getting adequate oxygen or nutrients, leading to blood backing up, resulting in fluid buildup in the lungs causing shortness of breath. Usually, heart failure begins with the lower left heart chamber, called the left ventricle which is the main pumping chamber. However, heart failure can also affect the right side (2021). Clinical Manifestations -Dyspnea with activity or lying down. -Chest Pain. -Fatigue and weakness -Difficulty concentrating or decreased alertness -Reduced ability to exercise. -Swollen (legs, ankles, feet, and/or belly). -Rapid or irregular heartbeat. -Rapid weight gains due to fluid buildup. -Persistent cough with white or pink mucus. Diagnostic Methods Blood test (looks for a specific protein made by the heart and blood vessels that increases in heart failure). Chest X-ray (shows the condition of the heart and lungs) Electrocardiogram (sees the electrical signals in the heart, slow or fast). Echocardiogram (shows the size and structure of the heart, heart valves, and blood flow through the heart). Ejection Fraction (measure the percentage of blood leaving the heart each time it squeezes). Stress test (can see the heart's response to physical activity). CT Scan (it’s an X-ray that can create a cross-sectional image of the heart) MRI (creates detailed image of the heart). Coronary angiogram (spots blockage in the heart arteries) Myocardial biopsy (removes a small part of the heart to examine). Commonly Prescribe Medications ACE inhibitors, Beta Blockers, Diuretics, Potassium-sparing diuretics, Digoxin, Positive inotropes, Vericiguat, Hydralazine, and isosorbide dinitrate, Sodium-glucose cotransporter, Angiotensin II receptor blockers Appropriate Lifestyle Changes -Maintain a healthy weight. -Do not smoke. -Exercise -Eat healthy. -Take medication as directed. -Reduce and manage stress.
