Flint water Discussion
After viewing the resources on the Flint Water Crisis post your response associated with each activity.
What factors brought about this crisis?
It was negligence from the state. Lead in the water due to pipes corrosion. It caused an outbreak of Legionella on June 2014. It
was caused due to a Water switch the state regulators did not follow the advice of one of the foremans, he knew they were not ready to make the switch. One of his supervisors even stated in an email to the state regulator that if the plant were to open it was going to be against his direction, but no one listened.
What measures could have prevented or mitigated the health outcomes faced by the citizens of Flint?
They should have followed protocol, they must have checked all the pipes, changed them, and most importantly they should have tested
the water and disinfected it.
How will this impact how you practice as a future health professional?
This shows how we, as nurses, should always advocate for the community and our patients.
What are your views regarding the recent settlement reached for the victims?
I believe the victims should have been helped more, all of them
should have received more compensation, the state should have paid for all their medical expenses.
