Reflection Week 8- Supporting Patients Using Technology Name American Military University HCAD501 Technology Application in Healthcare Organizations Dr. Barbara Cliff December 27, 2023
Innovation in Technology is changing how health administrators manage and support their patients; "computing power, internet, and wearable technologies are transforming surgical operations into model-based procedures" (Yamin, 2018). As a healthcare administrator in a long- term care setting, I must be aware and educate patients about using Technology to improve healthcare delivery and the quality of care. Thus, supporting my patients by leveraging current Technology is paramount, which would drive patients' hopes and motivations to adopt future technologies. While there is more than just one way to leverage current and future Technology, one of the ways is by implementing and educating consumers about the electronic health records (EHRs) that enable healthcare providers to access patient information in real-time, thus providing another healthcare professional to provide better-informed decisions and improved patient outcomes. Telemedicine is another technology that could be utilized to leverage Technology in the present and future as it provides significant health benefits and cost reduction to patients. Telemedicine can support patients in the comfort of the patient's homes, especially for those in remote areas with minimal access to brick-and-mortar healthcare buildings. Telemedicine enables healthcare providers to provide quality healthcare services to consumers virtually, thus allowing for remote healthcare consultation, diagnosis, prescriptions, and treatments. In addition to the listed technologies, healthcare administrators can leverage patient portals, healthcare applications, and fitness apps to help promote and empower patients to take charge of their health and get more involved in their healthcare while promoting healthy and active lifestyles with healthcare consumers. All the tools discussed enable patients to a more accessible healthcare and help patients track health habits and progress while providing accessible communication with providers,
resulting in a healthier provider-patient relationship and overall positive patient outcomes. Looking into the future, healthcare administrators can expect to see further technological advancements such as robotics, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and sophisticated wearables. As such, healthcare administrators must remain current with technological innovation and keep up with the use and benefits of healthcare tools that can help advance patient care and deliver quality care that positively impacts patients' health outcomes. Advancement of Technology provides several benefits to the healthcare organization; as a healthcare administrator in a long-term care setting, I have witnessed patients choosing a long- term care facility based on the level of technological advancement provided by such facility; for example, some long-term care facility has TapestryHealth a Remote Patient Monitoring are services that the Centers approve for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) as a way of meeting the complex health care needs of patients suffering with multiple chronic conditions. Other than being competitive in the healthcare market, healthcare organizations also benefit from governmental grants and incentives provided to healthcare organizations with technological advancement. It is also imperative to mention that technological advancement presents some challenges, including but not limited to legal and regulatory hurdles, including significant variations in rules, regulations, and guidelines for practice, Lack of Multistate Telehealth Licensure, Patient Privacy and Confidentiality, Data Accuracy and Misdiagnosis, poor Provider- Patient Relationships, Fraud and Abuse, and Medical Liability (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2020).Healthcare Technology presents a significant upside to the healthcare business and consumers. As such, Healthcare Administrators and other stakeholders should continue working on the improvement of healthcare technology to help get more consumers on board and improve health outcomes.
