Grading Standards & Rubrics Intro to Public Health (PHE 200) General Guidelines for Assignments : All assignments, including discussion board posts, should follow a professional writing style with no spelling or grammatical errors. Points will be deducted for work that is not proofread for typographical errors. Discussion board postings and assignments should be cited in APA format . See below section titled "Definition of Quality References" for help choosing sources.   Dues Dates and Timeliness of Assignments: All Homework is due by 11:59 PM on the due date. The following deductions apply for late work: Discussions: No discussion board postings will be accepted late. Discussions are meant to be quasi-real time to replace a classroom discussion, so the reply value is lost if you are late. Assignments will be given full credit if the student requests an extension in advance and the extension is approved.  Unexcused or unapproved late submissions get a 10% deduction. Quizzes auto-close at 11:59 PM on the due date, and are not reopened or given a no-penalty extension without specific prior approval. Late quiz submissions will yield a 10% deduction. Written Assignments : I am seeking your understanding of the materials you read. Content copied from websites without proper citation is considered plagiarism and will be addressed per CUNY Academic Integrity policies. Your homework assignments will automatically be screened through SafeAssign for plagiarism once you submit. You will be able to see the report. If your plagiarism score is high ( greater than 30% not including the citations) you must make the necessary edits and resubmit. Sometimes a high plagiarism score is due to incorrect citations. If this is not the case, you need to reconsider whether or not the writing is in your own words. You will have two total attempts to submit. I will deduct points for high plagiarism scores. After the first offense, I will deduct points and give you a warning. The second time I will give a zero for the assignment. The third offense will need to be reported to the academic integrity office.
Assignment 1: In a 1-2 page summary, describe three actions that governments (federal and/or state) have taken to ensure that people are safer and healthier today than in earlier decades. Support your statements with your weekly materials and/or quality outside resources. Cite your sources in APA format. To receive full credit you must: 1. Describe with detail 3 actions that governments have taken to ensure health (3 points each, 9 points total) 2. Use supporting sources and in-text citations in APA format, correctly cited reference page in APA format (1 point) Assignment 2: Case Study. Listen to the podcast about the Legionnaire's Disease outbreak in 2015: http://www.wnyc.org/story/outbreak/ . Identify and answer the WHO, WHEN, and WHERE questions (the determinants of disease) in this specific case. To receive full credit you must: 1. Correctly identify the WHO (2 points) 2. Correctly identify the WHEN (2 points) 3. Correctly identify the WHERE (2 points) 4. Explain how the situation was resolved (1 point) 5. What were the public health implications? What did we learn? (3 points) Assignment 3: How do we show "what works" to improve health? Give an example of an evidence based program that has been successful in improving the health of the population. You may want to draw from some of these sites: Choosing Wisely: www.choosingwisely.org The Community Guide for Preventive Services: www.thecommunityguide.org Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality: www.ahrq.gov Cochrane Collaboration: www.cochrane.org/ (specific for medical care) What works for Health? The County Health Rankings toolkit: http://www.countyhealthrankings.org/roadmaps/what-works-for-health Part 2: Look up your hometown county (or other county that interests you) at the County Health Rankings website ( www.countyhealthrankings.org ). How healthy is your county compared to other counties in the state? What health factors are getting better? Getting worse? Find an example of evidence based program that has been successful in improving a health problem you see is also a target problem in your community that might work in your community. If it would not work in your community, explain why. To receive full credit, you must: 1. Explain how public health experts know what works to improve health (2 points) 2. Discuss an evidence based intervention that has worked (2 points) 3. Discuss the health status of your county or another county that interests you (2 points)
4. Discuss an evidence based intervention that could address a problem you found that is specific to your community or the community that you chose to write about (3 points) 5. Use supporting sources and in-text citations in APA format, correctly cited reference page in APA format (1 point) Assignment 4: In 1-2 pages, summarize one of the Public Health impacts of Climate Change. Include details and use quality outside sources to support your response. Cite your sources. To receive full credit you must: 1. Describe one public health impact of climate change (4 points) 2. Discuss what groups of people, or who/what the change affects (elderly, chronically ill, poor, animals, ecosystems, etc.) (3 points) 3. Use quality resources to support your writing (2 points) 4. Use supporting sources and in-text citations in APA format, correctly cited reference page in APA format (1 point) Grading Standards for Forums Discussions: Total Possible Points per forum: 10 Initial Posting content Off Topic, or repeating other students ideas, earns 0 points Partially on topic, arguments partially supported earns 3 points Fully answers questions with supporting references earns 6 points Content of replies Off Topic or repeating other students ideas earns 0 points Agrees, contradicts, or modifies without explanation earns 1 point Elaborates or contradicts with supporting references earns 2 points Number of postings One posting earns 0 points Two postings on same log-in earns 1 point Two or more postings over multiple log-ins/different days earns 2 points Quizzes Quizzes are based on information provided in the course, and are work 15 points each. Definition of "Quality References": Throughout the class, I am requesting at least 2 "Quality references" for your postings and assignments.  Here's what I mean by "quality": Best Peer-reviewed scientific journal articles (some examples are included in the modules).  This is the gold standard of data. Use them if you can.

Publications/websites from governmental or academic sources: CDC, NIOSH, National Institute of Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Mayo Clinic, etc.  Look for sites ending in .gov or .edu Good Mainstream journalistic sites:   CNN, CBS, C-SPAN, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, other national or regional news outlets Established Non-governmental organizations addressing specific areas of expertise: American Cancer Association, American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Use Caution Sites that end with  .com  or  .org vary widely in reliability, from very good to very biased to outright fraudulent.   When looking at these sites, ask Who is funding the site? What is their motivation? Who are their information sources? What science are they basing their conclusion upon? Then, there are general information sites like Wikipedia, About.com, and Ask.com. There is nothing wrong with these sites to get a little background if you are totally unfamiliar with a topic.  These sites, however, are not meant to provide you with the background science you need to build your knowledge base and succeed in class.  It's not college-level material (and will not be accepted in your assignments). Mid-Term Video/Podcast Project: “Picture a Healthier Neighborhood” 50 Points Identify a health problem in your neighborhood (or a nearby neighborhood) that resonates with you. Identify some of the underlying risk factors in that neighborhood that make the problem worse. In a 5-10 minute video, walk around your neighborhood to show examples of what that problem looks like in your neighborhood. OR in a 5-to-10-minute podcast, talk with neighbors or community members about this issue in your neighborhood. Think of health broadly—not just in terms of disease, but in factors that make it easier to be healthy. Here are some examples of themes you might want to chose from: Are there safe and nearby playgrounds for children to be active in? Are there places to buy fresh vegetables and other healthy foods nearby? Does the neighborhood feel safe to walk in? Are streets well lit? Are crosswalks and bike lanes available? Are there places for youth to gather and get support from caring adults? Or other community issues that resonate with you. Your video/podcast should include:
Demonstration of Public Health Issue in the selected neighborhood (10 Points) Demonstration of Risk Factors for the selected health issue in that neighborhood (10 Points) Use data to describe problem in the neighborhood context (9 points) Include Examples/Storytelling show what the problem looks like in “real life” (8 points) Description/examples of possible solutions (10 Points) The video should be engaging and concise (3 points) Note: if you are unable to make a video or audio recording (due to technology or privacy concerns), contact the instructor about an alternative journaling assignment. Discussion Board: Sharing Your Neighborhood “Picture”—Student Instructions Upload your video or audio file as a Blackboard Discussion thread so that others can view it. View and comment on at least 2 classmates’ work. What problem does the narrator describe? What are some evidence-based strategies (from your readings) that might help with this problem? Are these strategies “upstream” (primary prevention) or “downstream” (Secondary or tertiary prevention)? Policy Brief Assignment: 50 Points total. Policy Briefs are intended to be a summary of talking points to encourage decision- makers (whether an elected leader or a public or private official) to adopt a specific policy or practice. In the “Picture a Healthier Neighborhood” assignment, you identified a community health issue that resonated with you and provided illustrations of how that impacts the community. Your policy Brief is the next step in bringing positive change to address that issue. Review the course materials regarding policy, community environment, and social determinants of health (described above). Identify a related policy change that you believe would address the concern you identified and write about it in a two-page brief. Your policy brief should be two pages plus a reference page. You should cite references from health care or public health literature, using 2 to 5 total references. Your writing should be clear, concise, persuasive, demonstrate an understanding of the public health issue you are discussing, and reflect a thoughtful and considered opinion. It should be free of spelling and grammar errors and should be visually appealing. From What Makes a Good Policy Brief (Lewis, 2009) the best policy briefs: Are short and a bit repetitive. Policymakers may just scan the page, so provide multiple opportunities to grasp the most important points. They use common terms, spell out every acronym, and are easily understood by people who are not familiar the issue.
Policy briefs are primarily used by those with relatively little context or additional information, and your document must stand on its own. Provide sufficient evidence to present a compelling story about why change is needed. State a policy preference, and clearly and persuasively explain why this is the best option. Here are some examples of what the briefs could look like, from NJ Society of Professional Health Educators: NJSOPHE - Position Briefs In addition to submitting in the Assignment tab, you must also post your completed brief in the Discussion tab in the Week 15 folder. Read and comment on at least two of your classmates’ briefs. Policy Brief Rubric (50 Points Possible) Description of Public Health policy recommendation : Clear Statement of policy preference and defines what the policy-maker should do 10 points Use of data to describe problem, sources cited in bibliography 10 points Risk factors described: Describe the factors that contribute to problem to be solved, and how the recommended action will address the problem 9 points Examples (Graphics or story) illustrate health issue 8 points Policy Implications : Describes trends expected if policy is adopted (or not adopted) with data 10 points Writing style: Concise (fits on 2 pages), clear, correctly spelled 3 points
