Healthcare Research Priorities While clinical research takes a more preventative approach towards an individual, population health research takes the approach of looking at the health outcomes on a broader scale such as at a community level (Jacobsen, 2021). Although each type of research is equally important, the current state of population health outcomes and healthcare service delivery need more work so that both types of research fulfill the needs of both the individuals receiving the care and those providing the care. Some of these issues include the following, access, managing chronic disease, neglected health care services, and the capacity of the health care delivery system to better serve the population in terms of cultural competence,
quality, the workforce, financing, information technology, and emergency preparedness ((National Academies Press (US), 2002).
There are trends emerging throughout healthcare that must be a priority for population health and clinical research to help change some of the issues affecting the current state of population health outcomes and healthcare service delivery. Some of the most important trends for population health are telehealth, social determinants of health (SDOH), and reducing or eliminating disparities. Since COVID-19, the growth and need of telehealth has been more visible as a method of addressing the needs of the population. Telehealth provides better access to those who have access issues, “helping to catch disease progression earlier and ultimately prevent small problems from becoming big ones, [and] helps to manage chronic conditions and treatment adherence by providing simple, quick ways for people to check in with providers” (Appold, 2022). Reviewing SDOH and addressing disparities can be linked together, as some of the same issues are interrelated such as financial constraints to pay for healthcare and working within communities to help educate and break down barriers that cause disparities.

According to Georgia Schumacher, in her article Healthcare Manager Trends (2023)
, here are some of the key trends healthcare administrators need to consider to “ensure their organizations remain competitive, provide high-quality care, and meet the evolving needs of their patient populations”:
telehealth and remote care demand and impact
rise in digital health consumer products
rapid technological and scientific advances
data and analytics
patient-centered care movement
mental health integration
shift to value-based care
health equity and inclusivity
workforce shortages and turnover
evolving healthcare policies
When the healthcare administrator evaluates each of these trends along with the vision and goals of their organization, they will be better positioned to create and implement the necessary programs and policies and procedures to support their providers and their healthcare organization.
