In my understanding, the importance of being able to explain and predict health-related
behaviors is linked to the fact that it is difficult to imagine an activity or behavior that does not
influence health in some way, directly or indirectly, for better or for worse. Excessive alcohol
consumption is an example of behavior that has a direct negative impact on physical health.
Some personal characteristics such as hostility or passivity can also affect health. Some
behaviors affect health immediately, such as being involved in a car accident without wearing a
seat belt. However, other behaviors affect long-term health, such as excessive consumption of
fats and sodium. On the other hand, some behaviors produce both immediate and long-term
effects, such as the abusive use of alcohol and the practice of physical exercises. The model of belief and behavior, each with its own point of view, are our allies so that we can
understand how beliefs and behaviors are necessarily linked to our health. For example, The
Stages of Change Model can guide us through some steps towards a change as it “has been
applied to a variety of health-related behaviors such as smoking, alcohol use, exercise and health
screening behavior. It is also increasingly used as a basis for developing interventions that are
tailored to the specific stage of the specific person in question” Ogden, (2019). The Health Belief
Model (HBM) “predicts that behavior is the result of a set of core beliefs, which have been
redefined over the years” Ogden, (2019), such as perceiving the severity of the disease (for
example, “cancer lung disease is a serious disease”). By studying these models, we can see that
each one of them helps us to explain how directly or indirectly each belief and behavior has a
great influence on our health, in what way they are present in our lives and how we can identify
them.
Have you ever had an experience that your behavior or belief in some way influenced your
health? If yes, could you give an example?
