Competency Three Reflection
The financial advantages and disadvantages of putting sustainability projects into action vary depending on several variables, including the initiative's nature and scale, target market, level of government backing, and amount of investment needed. Here are some broad advantages
and disadvantages to think about, though.
Financial Benefits:
By lowering energy use, waste production, and water use, among other things, putting sustainable measures into practice can save money over time. Lower energy expenditures can arise from making a move to energy-efficient appliances or lighting, for instance. Businesses that
use sustainable processes frequently draw clients who value the environment and are prepared to pay more for sustainable goods. Furthermore, organizations can boost brand recognition and enter new markets by implementing sustainable activities. Another benefit is Customers, stakeholders, and the public frequently have positive opinions of businesses that use sustainable practices, which can boost brand awareness and consumer loyalty. The last point is businesses that implement sustainable practices are perceived as proactive and responsible, which can improve their reputation and draw in new clients, staff members, and investors.
Financial Drawbacks:
It can be costly to implement sustainability efforts, particularly if they call for the installation of new machinery or technologies. The expenses of retraining staff members and altering company procedures can also pile up. On the other hand. when it comes to putting sustainability plans into action, there are some circumstances when a financial loss could be justified. These circumstances, which are sometimes referred to as "stranded costs," arise from investments made in unsustainable activities that are neither economically feasible nor socially

acceptable. In certain situations, businesses could decide to suffer a short-term financial setback to set themselves up for long-term success. Businesses may find it challenging to recover their investment if governments fail to offer sufficient backing for sustainability projects. Policies promoting sustainability are being introduced by governments more frequently. Examples of these policies include waste reduction mandates, energy-efficiency targets, and carbon emissions
standards. Businesses that move to more sustainable operations to comply with these regulations may experience short-term financial losses. Employee and investor resistance to change and a reluctance to support sustainability measures may arise from certain stakeholders or employees, which can lower motivation. Finally, the market's desire for sustainable products and shifts in governmental legislation are only two examples of the many variables that might affect the returns from sustainability projects, which can be hard to forecast.
In conclusion, businesses should carefully weigh the possible long-term benefits and drawbacks before deciding, even though a financial loss may be acceptable in some circumstances. If a financial loss is a component of a bigger plan to set up a business for long-
term success, adhere to rules, maintain goodwill, or show corporate social responsibility, then it might be justified.
Tools/resources available to healthcare leaders to help guide sustainable operations.
According to an article in Healthcare Facilities Management, returning value through sustainability seems to be more important than ever. Based on research from The Center for Health Design and best practice studies, there are twelve variables to consider when designing a medical facility. The following few tactics can help institutions of all sizes by creating evidence that improves patient satisfaction, sustainability of the environment, and financial viability.

Light and windows
The thoughtful placement of windows allows for views of greenery and natural light, two
essential aspects of nature. The proximity of nature to residents can have a soothing effect on their emotions and provide visually attractive vistas from their quarters. Windows are essential for bringing natural light into a room. An important part of the unfavorable institutional atmosphere in healthcare facilities is perpetuated by the fluorescent direct overhead illumination.
Warmer, calmer lighting can be achieved in part by using other lighting sources, especially natural light. Artificial illumination that mimics the natural world and circadian rhythm can also be employed if windows are not an option.
Building Layout
One of the most crucial uses of a healthcare facility's floor plans is to increase its efficiency. Patients and staff benefit from both centralized and dispersed care centers. There are fewer injuries and more time spent on one's feet as a result of the shorter travel times to and from
the patient rooms. An effective way for personnel to stay in tune with nature and circadian cycles
is to move natural light from the building's exterior into interior areas where people spend most of their time. Building orientation and room layoff can also have a significant impact on durability and evidence-based design outcomes. Creating a more peaceful and quieter environment also contributes to less noise in the front and back of the house.
Materiality
Natural and long-lasting materials aid in the healing and overall well-being of patients in medical facilities. Improving the environment's health inside the design itself is directly possible with the materiality focus. Hazardous substances known as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are released into the air by some materials and products. These chemicals can be
5
particularly harmful to patients who are already sensitive. That's the reason 'low or no VOC' products are sought and sustainable materials are considered. More ecological and healthful material solutions are available now than ever before. The sustainability of a substance is mostly determined by its life cycle. Everything that happens to the materials, including how they are obtained, handled, installed, and eventually recycled, has an impact on their overall sustainability. Given the abundance of options accessible today, a wide range of aesthetic preferences are taken into consideration. Materials that mitigate the clinical atmosphere of medical facilities foster a sense of coziness and ease, both of which are crucial for the therapeutic
process.
These tactics can be wise for your facility's financial health as well. In the increasingly consumer-driven world, these design techniques can set your company apart from competitors and boost client happiness and return on investment. Getting certified to verify that your building
is health-optimized is a simple approach to make sure that your operations follow the best practices covered here.
