2 COMPETENCY ONE REFLECTION How do you define sustainability in health care? According to the American Hospital Association, in health care, sustainability refers to the integration of environmental stewardship, social equity, and fiduciary responsibility to support healthy, equitable, and resilient environments and communities over time. In my opinion, a sustainable healthcare program is one that offers workable fixes and avoids issues that can be dealt with daily. Moreover, it is a process that can be quickly modified to accommodate future changes in the industry and is also open to continual improvement. In the end, a sustainable healthcare system is one that satisfies population demands while taking into account existing resources, including infrastructure, human capital, technology, and financial resources. Individual accountability for taking the initiative to make better healthcare decisions that impact oneself and one's family is another facet of sustainability. What opportunities exist in your organization for meaningful dialogue about sustainable practices? I work as a part-time substitute for a small, minority-owned hospice company that strives to support and comfort individuals at the end of their lives as well as their families. Improving patient care and offering all our patients and their families a nice, consoling experience is one of our hospice's goals. To address these issues and have a conversation about our hospice methods and culture as well as how we proceed with the care of every patient, our management team arranges twice-weekly meetings. In addition to our twice-weekly meetings, management maintains an open-door policy and welcomes thoughts, ideas, and opinions from coworkers regarding how we may enhance our operations. We have a policy that rewards staff members who make recommendations. The source of every concept that is accepted, put into practice, and improves or saves money for the business is rewarded.
3 How important is “green” in the overall purchasing decision for healthcare products and supplies? Defend your answer. The two main factors we consider when buying medical supplies and equipment are application and efficacy. It is critical that the patients' supplies and drugs function when it comes to their comfort. When nurses offer drugs to doctors and when doctors prescribe them, it might be challenging to compare which is "greener" than the other. The effectiveness of that specific medication in treating a patient's ailment serves as their justification for issuing those recommendations. Additionally, the healthcare team has the authority to independently decide on matters pertaining to the patient's plan of care, including therapy and medication. Our non-medical needs, such as paper, printers, ink, office supplies, and basic supplies, are covered by the "green aspect" of acquiring supplies. Our policy takes cost and appropriateness into account for certain items. My office manager took sustainability and reusability into consideration when we ordered those goods. We can place an order if the expenses are affordable. Does purchasing green products impact the supply chain budget? In what way? It influences our budget, particularly since, as a small firm, we don't utilize enough products to qualify for cheaper prices from our suppliers. Trying to order materials that might be reused, even at higher costs, is one of the things we have been doing. In the long run, it is more economical to have reusable things. As an illustration, they ordered disposable plates, cups, and utensils before I started working here. We saved money and reduced trash in our business when we replaced those under my supervision with reusable ones. Even though we still occasionally order disposable products when the need arises, the amount purchased is far less.
