As an
elementary education teacher
, you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child
development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development
research and theory has shaped
early childhood education
and the decisions teachers make in
the classroom.
After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be
atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What
knowledge did you base this from?
Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your
classroom based on children’s developmental readiness.
I observed a child who I believed to be atypical when it came to physical development, which was an
experience I had recently. At my work, I have been a long-term sub for a pre-k classroom while their
main teacher is out on maternity leave. We had a new student join our class before Christmas break.
I noticed almost instantly the child was quite smaller than the rest of the kids in our class. These
children are age four in this room but for the new student, he was about the size of an older
2-year-old. I saw the child struggling with simple tasks such as reaching the wall pump soap for our
washing hands station, opening the door to the restroom without struggling due to it being heavy,
and hanging up his art projects on our clothespin line due to the height of it. I was informed by our
chef that he had a severe dietary restriction list due to many allergies. This tipped me off his growth
might be stunted due to the lack of nutrients he was not receiving due to his long list of allergies. I
quickly noted that he also did not have much muscle build-up, especially on his arms he had trouble
carrying heavy items from one side of the classroom to the other, and he did not have the correct
physical build-up. Based on him joining our class I casually added steps stools in different parts of
the room in case needed for this child to complete simple tasks like hanging up wet drawings or
reaching soap to wash hands at proper times throughout the day. When we do something called “
thumbs up” in my room that promotes physical development if they have to do something involving
carrying I will lighten his load to an appropriate amount that he can carry but also challenge him just
enough.
