A Mental Health Crisis: Veterans Edition
I am choosing to write about the mental health crisis within the veteran population. My “dream career” would be to work within the Department of Veterans Affairs at a VA hospital. This topic is interesting to me as I, myself, am a veteran and have experienced firsthand the lack of treatment available to our former service members. According to the US Census Bureau, there are over 18 million American veterans as of 2020. This number does not include the number of adults currently serving on active duty in the National Guard or Reserves. Our veteran population deserves more than the current healthcare they have access to due to the sacrifice they willingly gave to our country. One of the leading causes of death in American veterans is suicide and has been for decades. However, even though our country is no stranger to war, we only recently (1980s) made Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) a diagnosable condition. (Inoue C, Shawler E, Jordan CH, et al. Veteran and Military Mental Health Issues). Veterans volunteer to serve their country and once they are no longer of use in the military or their terms of conditions have expired (ETS), they are left fighting internal and mental battles people cannot see. As a community we have neglected the mental health crisis yet, continue to profit from their stories, victories (and losses) by way of Hollywood. Yet, as we all hear and see, 22 veterans a day die by way of suicide. This seems to be a vastly overlooked population that includes many minority groups as well. Many women, people of color and immigrant groups make up our diverse veteran population.
