Positive Reinforcement ○
Definition: When a response is followed immediately by the presentation of a stimulus change that increases the future occurrence of similar responses ○
Alex has difficulty paying attention in class, her BCBA has implemented a token system to help Alex. Everytime she pays attention in class without needing to be prompted, she receives a token. Once Alex gets all four tokens she is able to enjoy drawing. In this example, Alex is being given tokens (adding) for paying attention in class. The visual representation of tokens allows Alex to see her own progress. Once she receives four tokens she’s able to exchange them for a highly preferred item, in this case, drawing. In reference to the definition, token’s are being added in order to increase the behavior of her paying attention in class. ●
Negative Reinforcement ○
Definition: When the occurrence of a response produces the termination, reduction, postponement, or avoidance of a stimulus, which leads to an increase in the future occurrence of that response.
○
Aaron uses a PECS system to communicate with his RBT. While eating lunch, Aaron hands his RBT a PECS that says “all done.” The RBT then removes his lunch. Aaron has learned that when he chooses his “all done”
PECS his food is removed. This example relates to negative reinforcement because something is being removed. In this case, the lunch is being removed because Aaron chose the “all done” PECs. Thus, increasing the behavior of Aaron continuing to choose that PECS in the future.

Positive Punishment ○
Definition: When the presentation of a stimulus immediately following a behavior results in a decrease in the frequency of behavior. ○
Megan recently assigned her students math homework that needed to be completed by Friday. Some of her students decided not to complete the assignment. Megan decides to assign extra homework to those who did not complete their assignment on time. This example demonstrates positive punishment because Megan has chosen to assign extra assignments to her students that did not complete the homework by Friday. The homework being added will decrease the likelihood of her students forgetting to complete it in the future. ●
Negative Punishment ○
Definition: When the removal of an already present stimulus immediately following a behavior results in a decrease in the future frequency of the behavior
○
John was running late one morning and wasn’t paying attention to the speed limit. A police officer pulls behind him and signals for him to pull over. John becomes annoyed because not only is he running late, but now
he is in trouble. The police officer gives John a speeding ticket for going 10 over the speed limit. John knows to never speed again. This is an example of negative punishment because John was given a speeding ticket (taking away money) and now he knows to never speed again (decrease behavior).
