Welcome and Teaching Philosophy In this course, I will be your faculty facilitator to direct you through the covered topics. I am here to provide directions or answer questions, so please do not hesitate to ask. We highly encourage you to discuss the topics in the course with one another and learn from each other. You should approach this course with an open mind and listen to ideas that may differ from yours, keeping in mind that having a difference of opinion is not wrong when posting and engaging with fellow classmates on the discussion board. We will use the announcements to convey information to you while enrolled in this course. We value your insight, experience, and input on the discussion board. When engaging in the discussion boards, you can share your thoughts, but we want you also utilize content from the textbook and scholarly sources to support your thoughts and opinions. The discussion board is designed for more than opinion, as we want you to connect your experience with content and concepts presented. I use grading rubrics to show you where you gained and lost points on assignments. Successful students will carefully review rubric scores and written feedback and adjust their work on future assignments. You have the responsibility to be respectful and supportive to your classmates and instructor. All communications should be respectful and professional, whether by text, email or on the class discussion board. I value your sharing of personal experiences as pertains to class discussions and assignments, whether as patient, observer or as a healthcare professional. You should be prepared to hear ideas, opinions and values that may differ from yours. Listen to understand and you will learn. While your ideas, opinions and experiences are valuable, it is key that you support these with scholarly sources from your text or other reading assigned. A little about me, I am a full-time Lecturer at UTRGV, and this is my second year with the university. I have been teaching online for five years and held leadership roles in healthcare. Although this course is offered in the asynchronous online format, this is not a self-paced course, nor will this course be an easy “A”. This course will be divided into weekly lessons.  New lessons open each Monday at 6 am and you have until Sunday at 11:59 pm to submit your work.  We recommend reviewing each lesson on Monday and reading and working on assignments throughout the week to keep the content active in your mind and daily experiences.   We recommend submitting your work as early as possible during the week in case you experience internet outages, need to work extra shifts or in case other unexpected difficulties arise during the week.  Since you have a full week’s flexibility built into the design of the course, it is very unlikely We will approve extension of a due date. You can expect to spend about 8-10 hours each week working on the course reading, discussions, assignments, and quizzes. HONORS COLLEGE- COURSES BY CONTRACT: Students in the UTRGV Honors College may receive honors credit for this course by taking the course as “honors-by- contract.” Honors contract forms along with honors-by-contract guidelines may be downloaded from the Honor’s College “ Current Student Information ” web page. These forms must be sent (along with a copy of the course syllabus and a brief description of the extra work to be done in order to earn honors credit) to honors@utrgv.edu no later than January 25, 2023. Your instructor must send the honors-by-contract evaluation form to the same email address by close of business on the date that grades are due. Therefore, your instructor may impose an earlier deadline for honors contract work to be submitted. If you have questions about the honors-by-contract process, see the honors-by-contract guidelines for additional information. Instructors of honors-by-contract courses must turn in their evaluation forms by the close of business on the date that grades are due. This is a hard deadline, since we must notify the registrar’s office to add a notation to the student’s transcript showing that this was an honors course. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Mark Andersen, Dean of the Honors College, at mark.andersen@utrgv.edu . Course Assignments & Learning Objectives Course requirements may include assignments, skill building via LinkedIn Learning, quizzes, examinations among others. Course Learning Objectives: A.  Examine the role of management and leadership in healthcare. B.  Develop the management skills needed to lead a healthcare team. C. Show the role of management and leadership in building an organizational culture. D. Illustrate how to manage and lead teams in healthcare delivery. E. Assignment Feedback: Feedback on course assignments will take place in various forms. Review your grades in the gradebook. Note the scale for each assignment and interpret points assigned. For example, if you earn 15/20 points, that is the same as 75%. Click on the grade to open the scoring rubric and to see written feedback on your work. Reviewing the rubric will show you where points were assigned and deducted. You can use this information to improve your performance on the next assignment. Additional written feedback may be provided on assignments, and you can see my feedback on your assignment after it is graded. Lock Down Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard and replaces regular browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Respondus Monitor requires you to have a webcam and microphone as it will record you while taking your assessment. YOUR ACTIVITIES ARE RECORDED WHILE YOU ARE LOGGED INTO OR TAKING YOUR ASSESSMENT(S).  THE RECORDINGS SERVE AS A PROCTOR AND WILL BE REVIEWED AND USED IN AN EFFORT TO MAINTAIN ACADEMIC INTEGRITY.  You can also find more detailed information on Lockdown Browser and Monitor . LEARNING AND TEACHING ENVIRONMENT As your instructor, will assist you in the facilitation and guide you though this online course. We do not present 3-hour lectures nor expect you to endure a 3-hour lecture. Instead, we provide short videos, LinkedIn Learning videos (skill building), and micro-lectures identify key points and themes and enhance the course content. Since the micro-lectures will not cover all the content form the text, it is the student’s responsibility to carefully read each chapter to be successful on quizzes, assignment, and exams. We are here to provide you with directions and answer questions as they arise, so please reach out if you need assistance. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. UTRGV’s attendance policy excuses students from attending class if they are participating in officially sponsored university activities, such as athletics, accommodation by Student Accessibility Services (SAS), observance of religious holy days, or military service. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor in advance of the excused absence and arrange to make up missed work or examinations.
In this online course, attendance will be evaluated by logging into the course regularly and by submitting your assignments on time each week. The format of this course is flexible. New assignment weeks start each Monday and run through Sunday each week. Students can work anytime of the day or night and on any day of the week that fits their schedule, as long as work is completed and submitted by the due date. If you plan to travel or have a busy work schedule, then you can work ahead and have the flexibility to access your course from any location with internet access. Due to the flexible course design, it is very unlikely that a situation will arise where a student can’t meet a deadline. If you anticipate a circumstance in which you might miss a due date, please reach out to me before missing the deadline and be prepared to provide documentation of the circumstances. Changes in due date affect more than just you; other students will be delayed in receiving grades and feedback and this is not taken lightly. Extended due dates are rarely justified. ABSENCES/SICK POLICY See attendance policy. Due to the flexible course design, routine illness will not affect a student’s ability to complete/submit work on time. If you are not feeling well, you can spread your work over several days and still meet the due date. If you have a serious illness requiring hospitalization or an extended illness, please contact me to discuss. Student Accessibility Services (SAS) will need to certify any ongoing, long-term accommodations and it is the student's responsibility to meet any SAS requirements for the certification process. Some work cannot be made up, including discussions. After the rest of the class has moved on to the next lesson, there will be no one to discuss with you. Quizzes, assignments and exams cannot be made up if grades/feedback have already been released to the class. Class Recording Policy: The use of classroom recordings is governed by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), UTRGV’s acceptable-use policy, and UTRGV HOP Policy STU 02-100 Student Conduct and Discipline. A recording of class sessions will be kept and stored by UTRGV, in accordance with FERPA and UTRGV policies. Your instructor will not share the recordings of your class activities outside of course participants, which include your fellow students, teaching assistants, or graduate assistants, and any guest faculty or community- based learning partners with whom we may engage during a class session. You may not share recordings outside of this course. As referenced in UTRGV HOP Policy STU 02-100 Student Conduct and Discipline , doing so may result in disciplinary action.

COURSE DROPS If you are not doing well in the course and are considering dropping, please contact me first to discuss your grade in the course. Dropping a course may save your GPA but it may also affect your financial aid eligibility. According to UTRGV drop policy , students may drop any class without penalty earning a grade of DR (drop) until the official drop date. Following that date, students must be assigned a letter grade and can no longer drop the class. Students considering dropping the class should be aware of the “3-peat rule” and the “6-drop” rule so they can recognize how dropped classes may affect their academic success. The 6-drop rule refers to Texas law that dictates undergraduate students may not drop more than six courses during their undergraduate career. Courses dropped at other Texas public higher education institutions will count toward the six-course drop limit. The 3-peat rule refers to additional fees charged to students who take the same class for the third time. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Members of the UTRGV community uphold the Vaquero Honor Code ’s shared values of honesty, integrity and mutual respect in our interactions and relationships. In this regard, academic integrity is fundamental in our actions, as any act of dishonesty conflicts as much with academic achievement as with the values of honesty and integrity.  The Writing Center is an excellent resource to assist in learning about and avoiding plagiarism in writing. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to: cheating, plagiarism (including self-plagiarism ), and collusion; submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person; taking an examination for another person; any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student; or the attempt to commit such acts (Board of Regents Rules and Regulations, STU 02-100, and UTRGV Academic Integrity Guidelines).  All violations of Academic Integrity will be reported to Student Rights and Responsibilities through Vaqueros Report It . Student Support Resources We are committed to your personal, academic, and professional success; please know you can reach out to me for questions and/or I can help you identify the resources you need. UTRGV offers student support resources designed to contribute to your well-being and academic excellence. Students seeking academic help in their studies can use university resources in addition to an instructor’s office hours.
