Article Summary
Assessments are an integral component of the learning process. When they are implemented effectively within the educational environment, the students benefit from increased learning opportunities. Therefore, for assessments to be used effectively, educators must possess innate knowledge regarding the efficacy of assessments and be able to understand how assessment can be used and implemented. To support an educator’s ability to develop, build, and maintain their knowledge regarding the use of assessments within the educational environment, training and professional development is key. According to McMillan (2000), assessments are comprised of eleven principles that guide the educator. When the educator understands the eleven principles of assessments, they are able to identify the strength and weakness of each student as a means to support their individual learning needs. When educators utilize assessments, they can be implemented in a variety of ways that are efficient and feasible for the students. each student and their needs, instruction can be targeted to their needs as a way to support their learning process. While assessments are utilized throughout educational environments on a daily basis, understanding the eleven principles of how to implement assessment is necessary for every
educator. When assessments are implemented effectively and with efficacy, every student will be
supported academically. Personal Reflection
As a special education instructional assistant within a self-contained special education classroom, I am able to experience first-hand how assessments can positively impact students, their learning process, and their progress. Many of the students within my classroom started the school year at a first-grade level. However, through continued assessment that is targeted towards the individual needs, the educator as well as the classroom staff have been able to target instruction towards their individual needs to promote academic achievement.
